With the current trailer/clips from "2012" wowing fans with its destruction fx of the world... Just curious- Beyond possibly making ANY film seem more epic with these type of sequences- (note my phrasing: "seem"- I ain't getting into that debate again over what's epic)--- Would a sequence like the destruction of Los Angeles in "2012" seem too dark and anti-family for a Superman movie, or possibly in the right direction for a giant battle in a Superman movie?
Thoughts? Votes?

Smashing up a city is mandatory for a Superman movie. There are plenty of ways to do this, even in a family friendly movie. Buildings can crumble without seeing the people inside die; the audience infers, rather than sees, helpless people trying to survive.
In fact, the Superman movies set an early bar for later action sequences - California almost slid in the ocean, whereas in 2012 it actually does. Metropolis got smashed up in SII; LA gets smoked in Transformers. The list goes.
This is Superman - for any fight to be credible, he has to face a viable threat, implying something with monstrous strength and none of the human values that limit Supes. Why wouldn't a bad ass heck bent on crushing Supes smash up a city to do it?

start with cleveland. then detroit. To be seen next year in Michael Bay's "Union-Man: The Movie." Pending approval by the teamsters, of course.
