Alright...for information purposes...I have compiled a return on investment (ROI) list of superhero movies. This is using cost information from sources I trust as well at TOTAL gross (domestic and international).
If you do not see a movie, it is probably because I do not have enough info on it (usually international gross). I selected movies featuring superheroes that existed in comic book form first.
Figures were rounded up/down where applicable.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- 14.96 (it made 14.96 times its cost) Batman ('89) -- 11.74 Spider-Man -- 5.91 Superman -- 5.56 Dark Knight -- 5.41 Iron Man -- 4.18 X-men -- 3.95 Spider-Man 2 -- 3.92 X-men 2 -- 3.70 Spider-Man 3 -- 3.45 Batman Forever -- 3.36 Batman Returns -- 3.33 Fantastic Four -- 3.30 Kick-Ass -- 3.20 Iron Man 2 -- 3.11 Thor -- 2.99 Blade II -- 2.87 Captain America -- 2.63 Wolverine -- 2.49 Batman Begins -- 2.48 Ghost Rider: SoV -- 2.32 Constantine -- 2.31 The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- 2.30 Daredevil -- 2.30 Fantastic Four ROTSS -- 2.22 X-men: First Class -- 2.21 Spawn -- 2.20 X-men 3 -- 2.19 Ghost Rider -- 2.07 Blade: Trinity -- 1.99 Batman and Robin -- 1.90 heckboy 2 -- 1.88 Hulk -- 1.79 Incredible Hulk -- 1.75 Punisher -- 1.64 heckboy -- 1.50 Superman Returns -- 1.45 Watchmen -- 1.42 Elektra -- 1.30 Losers -- 1.16 Green Lantern -- 1.10 Howard the Duck -- 1.03 Catwoman -- 0.82 Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World -- 0.80 Punisher War Zone -- 0.29 Jonah Hex -- 0.23

Batman and Robin, sounder financial investment than SR - fucking heck! SR right down there, no wonder WB are reluctant to get a sequel going!
ROI figs ain't as high as I thought overall.
Cheers for the info Shoges, quite interesting.

Ninja Turtles was one of my favorites as a kid, still is in a way. It's disappointing to me that Punisher is all the way at the bottom because, as cheesy and gratuitous as it is, it was not only true-er to the comics than the first 2 movies, it was my 2nd favorite comic book movie that came out that year (Hulk was #1). I can't remember the last time I had that much fun at the movies. I love bad/good movies like that and I'm glad I saw it with friends who feel the same way.

And SR is without a doubt better than most of those movies.

James Cameron in a CNN video interview recently talked about how some classics take a LONG time to recover their money.
He noted that "2001:A Space Odyssey" took over 20 years to make its money back. And "Blade Runner" was a flop when it first came out in theatres.
So....if SR is a financial disappointment, it's in great company with classics.

I love how in so many cases, everyone here says box office doesn't make a difference whatsoever in the actual quality of the movie, except in the case of Superman Returns.

I almost forgot. I think Citizen Kane was also a box office flop. Again, SR in good company...

Those figures aren't even accurate though. Superman Returns had a budget of about $209 million. It grossed $200 million domestically and $191 million internationally. The total gross was roughly $391 million. That would make the ROI 1.87. The figures for Batman and Spiderman are accurate but SR is way off.

I used the figure of $270M for cost of SR as shown on boxofficemojo.com. Now, the development heck topic battle may commence.... (That would make it go up a mere 4 spots anyway)

I don't recall ever making such a comment but this info is simply return on investment. It's just figures that, I am sure, producers and investors are interested in....merely another way to look at net profit.

I can't find any foreign returns for Superman II, but I think its ROI is in the 3 to 3.5 range. In USA alone, it made 2x its budget.

Sad to see "Watchmen" so low, but not surprising. It's not for everyone, though I happen to think its a masterpiece. And I've read the graphic novel; I though the film was superior.

The question is which cut of the movie is Kirok talkng about: theatrical (162 min), director's (186 min), or ultimate (215 min)?
