Actually, Hearst was very clever--- rather than blasting the movie in his papers (which would have garnered more attention for the film- he had his papers totally ignore it, as if it didn't exist.
In any case, the general idea comes up; people can love or hate SR, of course, but history shows that box office at the time something comes out, isn't the whole story in a lot of cases about quality. Or taste.
Bottom line: Loving or hating SR is subjective. One liked it or didn't.
Talking about elements that did/didn't work for a person helps in discussion, but it usually won't change a person's mind about what they felt about a film in the first place.

I found it rather interesting that movies that came in under the 2.00 ballpark pretty much led to the end of the franchise or a reboot. Exception being heckboy.
Edit...Oh and Ghost Rider (I think)...he's getting a sequel, right?
