I think they ALL aged pretty good--- Consider how many years have passed- they're probably all in their 40's or 50's now, aren't they? Haiduk and Christopher both look more youthful than Cain to me. Besides putting on a little weight he just looks rough. The guys in his mid 40's. Haiduk is only a couple of years younger. Gerard is fifty three. FIFTY THREE. For his age he looks a LOT better than Cain these days. But then Christopher always looked like he was in better shape even in both their primes. like Val said Gerard Christopher could probably get away with playing an older Superman NOW. Cain? I can't really see it.

I've been friendly with the actor who plays Batman in Batman Live for a while now, Sam Heughan.
I had known for a while that he had been in the Ilya Salkind produced Young Alexander the Great, so today I asked him about working with Ilya.
Sam said Ilya is a real character with a great heart. He got quite close with Ilya while working on Young Alexander...so much so that Ilya was pushing for him to get the part of Superman in Returns. He got as far as several meetings with Singer and other producers.

Looks cheesy, like a Joel Schumacher wet dream. Not sure I'd pay money to see that.

It's a spectacle of a show and worth every penny. I haven't heard anyone who's seen it be disappointed.

Good read, can't argue with any of it, especially regarding downplaying the character. He has a good take on the Hackman Lex
I think most people on this board could produce a better overall treatment than what we got

Now some of you might be saying, "Hey big mouth, making a movie is hard. Like you could do better? Sit down and shut up." Here's the thing. I could make a better Superman movie. Anyone could make a better Superman movie actually. I wouldn't say 'sit down and shut up'.... but I'm amazed how many great things about the film didn't even register with this guy. Add to that, the comment, 'Anyone could make a better Superman movie' makes my eyes roll, though I'm glad he gave proper credit to Singer for the Xmen movies.

Superman has about 5 lines. Clark Kent has less. Clark Kent might as well have not returned when Superman did. Regardless Clark/Superman is the main character and he is downplayed and marginalized to a shocking degree. This is like the On Her Majesty's Secret Service of Superman films. Unsure if new James Bond George Lazenby could anchor the new bond film, the producers went nuts making sure everything else in the film was perfect and amazing and minimized Bond himself as much as possible, just in case. Seems they felt the need to go the same way here. Hey, if you don't think your Superman can anchor your film, recast or don't make the movie. Scaling down Superman's role in a Superman movie is moronic. This was a good point too.

I agree with what most are saying here, but in reference to less dialogue for the main character, Keanu Reeves has very little dialogue in "The Matrix" and the movie is a classic.

I didn't think it was scaled down any more than, say, the amount of screen time Reeve got for STM, Bale got for Dark Knight--- The main thing I might agree on is the weak choice of re-introducing Lex as a real estate nut.... it was weak in STM, it didn't help SR's case either.

if SR had been made after S2 and starred Reeve and Kidder would it have been good?
same story as the Routh movie but with the original actors. Would it have made the relationship more believable?

It's possible. A very interesting question and point you've raised there.

Interesting question. Not without major changes to the plot and structure. It's too similar to STM. The idea of absence, the kid, and Luthor getting hold of Kryptonian tech certainly would have worked, though. His plan of what to do with it would have to be different. Maybe that could have been the Brainiac angle!

I agree that it's an interesting thought.....but I also agree with Val, there's too many (intentional) similiarities in STM to really work- but if you took some of those out, and put in Brainiac as Val suggested, it could- but moreso, I'm curious how this idea plays to the rest of the forum, imagining Reeve and Kidder in the same story- if that would have satisfied those who had problems with Bosworth and Routh in it.
Personally, I'd remove the real estate stuff with Luthor and DEFINITELY have had some sort of Superman supervillain put in there....

That's really the key. The kid works in context of the Donner franchise, especially after Superman II. But SR's various homages to STM wouldn't have worked in, say, 1985 or whatever. But by substituting the real estate plot with a "Lex teams up with Brainiac" thing (perhaps Brainiac became aware of this last Kryptonian when Supes went back to check on Krypton?), and the destruction of Metropolis is then a byproduct of Brainiac trying to steal the city, suddenly things fall in line.

I wonder if Margot Kidder would have said, "It's deadly... to him."

I think a lot of things would have been stricken from the script- as I think the whole reasoning behind that (painful) line was that the studio (or Singer) might have been a little too concerned that people wouldn't have known about Kryptonite, after Supes had been gone from the theatres for so long. Could be a fair thing... given not everyone on the street is that familiar with Superman lore.... but, yeah, even I cringe at that line reading. (Even as I wonder how COULD you deliver that line properly?)

6yrs on and people who hated it still go on and on about it losers At what point are you supposed to stop talking about a movie? Or, are you just supposed to talk about a 6+ year old movie if you liked it?

It's a Superman message board, ace. We're going to talk about SR, good or bad. Should no one speak ill of anything Superman based? Should no one talk shit about SIII or SIV? C'mon.
I'm pretty sure we ALL know, deep down inside, that SR was kinda shitty. Not all of it, mind you. There was some amazing stuff in there, there truly is a beautiful movie in there, but the final product is pretty weak for a movie about SUPERMAN. I LOVE the movie, Superman Returns, I really do, but I don't love all of it, and I totally know what the problems are, and they are really disappointing, given how long we waited for a new Superman movie and THAT'S what we got.
Losers.
You called people on a message board losers.
DAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Wonderful.
