Before we get too carried away with nitpicking STM, let us not forget that it got a sequel.
Please.

Before we get too carried away with nitpicking STM, let us not forget that it got a sequel 3 straight sequels, a pseudo sequel nearly 30 years later, a film spin off (Supergirl) a TV show spin off (Superboy) and inspired many other super hero films and TV shows Please. Fixed.

Oh, plenty of good movies don't need them.
E.T. comes to mind.
But were not talking about need. Were talking about get.
I really wanted to see the next chapter for Superman, set in that Universe. As the film set a few nice plot points for sequels.

Whatever. We will agree to disagree.
I would rather have seen a sequel to Superman Returns, as I love that fucking movie.

In a number of ways, not having the sequel is more painful than not getting Donner back for SII....
With Donner's situation: #1: We still have the scripts available to know what he would have done (aside from the ending) #2: At least 50-75% of it we got to see what was shot #3: We have footage (albeit from a rotten director) of the same actors about that time to be able to complete the story/more/less.
With SR: #1: No footage- apparently ever, outside of RTK #2: No script- wasn't done #3: No solid idea of what was going to be done
Even Xmen 3 got a credible synopsis from the screenwriter on what was going to happen next in that series, but only fragments of what would have happened with MOS.
If SR had adapted both STM & SII at the same time (which is sort of looks like the new Snyder film is going for- maybe)--- at least there might be a sense of resolution to it.
If, in the script, Richard had died in SR- same, too....at least there would be a sense of the major items being wrapped up (although it would be REALLY sad to have the idea that Richard died, being deceived by Lois that Jason was his son all along).
Anyhow..... hopefully Singer feels strong enough about it to come back to it & tell the rest of his story in comics or book form. (Not holding my breath, though)

Isn't there enough depression in SR as it is???

Since the direction of Supes II was going for Greek tragedy (of sorts)--- as well as was the first two.... it would have at least put some sort of real ending to the story.
And--- someone almost always dies in Greek tragedy (or so I'm told).
But as it stands.... It feels like the first chapter of a book, not a whole film. I love it, but it's incomplete without the second part. (Much like STM, because of the inclusion of the Criminals' bit)

Unless they kill Richard and The Brat in the first five minutes, mindwipe everyone's memories of them out of existence, Brainiac nukes the west coast and all out superwar ensues, and Bosworth Lois is magically replaced by, well...anyone else...then my interest in a Superman Returns sequel is pretty much zilch.
Even when I walked out of SR on opening night, buzzing and loving it, I said, "it doesn't feel like a beginning. It feels like an ending." Turns out I was right, but not in the way I thought.
It's like after all those years of failed productions and false starts that they just got two guys who knew nothing about Superman, showed them STM, and then filmed their first draft.

Everything Cypher and Val said.
I honestly don't think SR is going to age well either, especially if the new one is a success
I felt numb when I came out the cinema first time; I just think that downbeat overlong 3rd act killed it for me.

S:TM ans SR are ''comfort" movies for me. ( so is casablanca for that matter).
if i feel like relaxing, sittin back with a cold one, rubbing wifey's feet... i'll put in STM or SR and chill. if i have a had a SH*T SH*T day, and i want to burn the planet down..then i put in STM or SR and zone out. (that, and neil diamond records)

And a lot of great movies don't have sequels. True, but have you ever known a good superhero movie to not get a sequel? Superhero movies, by their nature, are designed to get sequels. So if one doesn't, it sends out a strong message. And it's even more of an indictment when a movie doesn't get a sequel, but instead the series gets rebooted. Think The Hulk and Die Another Day.

The only strong message I get is that SR deserved a sequel, and also that WB/Singer are idiots.

I honestly don't think SR is going to age well either, especially if the new one is a success And I think time will prove you wrong. I think it will age very well, & be treated as well as it was when it first came out & better than after the revisionism about the reviews & box office started.
