Sky Showcase seems to be showing Superman this evening, followed by Superman II then Superman Returns then Superman III and Superman 4 It appears they are showing them in the exact order of goodness.

It's getting tougher and tougher for me to put SR ahead of SIII. I have no trouble keeping it in front of SIV, though.

SIII has better special effects, a more original story, and is fun to watch rather than being dreary and depressing. Both films do have an annoying child with a retarded hairstyle, but at least in SIII he belongs to someone else. I would say SIV is just slightly ahead of SR. SIV was a good idea executed badly, while SR was a crap idea executed badly.

Its nuts but I do agree with this. It shouldn't be, but I do. CGI Superman and everything else = fail.
heck, Superman IV has a few better take offs and landings IMO. That take off right at the end (theatrical) is better than any take off from SR IMO. Did they use Routh on wires? The practice in the "making of" looked better than anything in the film.

well, the cgi works fine in the airplane sequence. S3 is far from having an action scene on that scale.
but none of the rough´s flying shots can top reeve on wires.

Hate to admit it, but most of the time, I was also a bit underwhelmed by the fx in SR. Some bits were great, but most of the time, the way the scenes were setup were a bit underwhelming to me.

well, the cgi works fine in the airplane sequence. Up until CGI Man is holding the nose of the plane as he places it down, and the shot of him flying away.

there were so many unnecessary CGI superman shots. shots that could've easily been pulled off on wires were instead done in shitty looking CGI.

To be fair.... Spiderman 1 and 2 also had a lot of fake-looking CGI spiderman shots.
The budget was there.....but maybe the technology or time to get it done right wasn't there?
In any case, I do agree.... regardless, would have rather that they greenscreened Routh and composited it, if need be. Wonder if enough lead time is why WB agreed to push back the movie. Even Donner wishes he had a chance to preview his film and have time to (presumably) go back and adjust things that the audience may or may not go with.

Laziness, efficiency, that's the new work ethic. Michael Bay, JJ Abrams and Chris Nolan are seen as mavericks (and are often praised) these days for having real stunts, practical effects, real explosions and wire work.

Yes, despite my reservations about TDK, most (all?) of the stunts were good. Hopefully overuse of cgi will go the way of 3D
That freerunning sequence in CR for example is better than anything in SR IMO

None of those heroes can do the things Superman can do. CGI is a must for the type of things a superhero like Supes can do. And Superman wears no mask so it's harder to replicate the real thing. I thought the FX in SR were mostly very good.

They were mostly good, but there is really NO excuse for having a CGI Superman in a closeup shot. In that final shot, they should have transitioned from CGI to Brandon much sooner in and when he was farther away, not when he's taking up the entire frame.

Exactly.
If you're going to use CGI, at least try to do it properly.

I'm grateful cgi was not around in the 1970s.

Agreed, Jim, that close up almost ruins that scene, but it's such a wonderful one that I can still enjoy it.
I think most of the FX in the Reeve movies are good.. for its time. Some still look pretty damn good.
Also, it seems all of those actors that had to use those harnesses to be able to "fly," suffer from some (serious?) back problems. That's really sad. I haven't heard Brandon saying anything like that, he still practices sports and seems to be fine. I wonder if that's the case.

Consistently I hear that about actors- not just on Superman films, but on other tv shows/ movies that have had to do wirework. Messing up one's back isn't a small thing to be concerned about- it can haunt you for the rest of your life.... I have a couple of relatives with back problems that are pretty serious- and they were never in a harness. I'd imagine that would be a good consideration before taking on the role, or deciding how much needs to be CGI, but still.... I'd imagine that mixing both should be heckuva lot easier now, than any other time in history...

It aired on BBC1 this Christmas in the UK - 29th December. For my 9th or 10th viewing, it is starting to go downhill, and I have now decided Superman III is still better - though it far surpasses Superman IV still.
The main problem I found this time was the pacing and the structure - not too slow from the start - but after the plane sequence, it all goes downhill in terms of editing - and even though there's some impressive sequences to come - it just feels a little... alien, sorry I mean boring.
And the many lines of homage and references to STM now just seem lazy. This came 28 years after STM - not a good way of attracting a whole new generation of Superman fans.
And the numerous CGI close-up shots of Superman are starting to really bug me! Absolutely pointless.
Love the music and Routh is great as Clark, not as great as Superman. Spacey is just not trying. And Bosworth is wrong, although the script makes her seem worse with all her "cheesey" lines.
The ending is a real mess, very sombre and a huge let down - it needed to end on a bang and instead it ends on him recovering from near death, repeating lines from STM and flying off all CGI like! He doesn't even really smile at the camera like Reeve did!
And don't even mention the insulting dedication to Chris and Dana Reeve which comes after the cast credits!!!
The makers of MAN OF STEEL know what SR did wrong and will hopefully use its failures to their advantage to make it a major player in 2013. $200 million domestic will be a failure. $300 million is surely the minimum goal for success. $400 + will show that Superman is back! And anything less than $1 billion worldwide will be a disappointment in my view.

Maybe Man of Steel will be dedicated to Superman Returns.
