they probably include marketing in the cost of the film.
Didn't SR have relatively poor DVD sales?

they probably include marketing in the cost of the film. I imagine they would. Why wouldn't they? It's a cost to the film. Same at actor's salaries, equipment, special effects, transportation, taxes, etc.

Great podcast from two currently-working screenwriters about the mechanics of what/where/how money works in Hollywood on each movie- (Start at about 1:30- podcast #38- "How movie money works" and it starts off on the whole talk about how the profits work for Hollywood, how it splits the profits with movie theatres- etc. and how the economics work on it). itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/scriptnotes-podcast/id462495496Go to podcast #38 for this topic. It shows how/why it's so hard to knuckle down what a studio REALLY made per film. Fascinating and frustrating stuff... but, yeah, the marketing is crazy amounts of money...

they probably include marketing in the cost of the film. Didn't SR have relatively poor DVD sales? According to the-numbers.com SR's domestic dvd sales equaled $81,608,882. I don't know how good that is since I don't know enough about DVD sales to to have any kind of frame of reference. www.the-numbers.com/movies/2006/SPRMN.php

No list from 2006? I'd like to see how it did compared to films released the same year.
Looks to me like SR did OK in dvd sales. Not amazingly well but going by the list you posted it made about ten million less than LFODH aka Die Hard 4.
I checked the-numbers.com and they have LFODH's dvd sales at $100 mil though.

Decided to compare SR's dvd sales to some other superhero releases in the same 2 year period
X-Men: The Last Stand $103,776,723
Fantastic Four $4,702,358 (this CAN'T be right)
FF: ROTSS $62,367,709
Ghost Rider $103,879,693
Didn't see anything for Batman Begins but I'd love to compare its dvd sales since its box office was comparable to SR's. With Ghost Rider I'm guessing a lot of people skipped seeing it in the theater and saw it for the first time on dvd. Thats what I did. I also wonder if its sales include both dvd versions or just the theatrical.

The weird thing is: how do you accurately figure out SR dvd sales when it was also included into the boxset the same year? (The same thing I wonder about how they figure the RDC did poorly on dvd--- when the fans knew it was also part of the boxset.... unless they're already taking that into account...)

Thats a good question that I've wondered about myself. Are there just sales numbers for individual releases of SR or do they also include box set sales somehow? Maybe people waited? Kinda muddles what drew people to buy what.
If you include box set sales SR's dvd numbers could be higher. But you can say that about any later dvd's that were released in box sets like the X-men films also were. Some people prefer to buy films like that at all at once. I know I've done that plenty of times when I've had the option of buying individual releases or buying a box set.

So, Bryan Singer came into my restaurant tonight. I made him a drawing that said, "To The Godfather Of Modern Comic Book Movies," then drew Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Cyclops and Captain America all saying, "Thank you!" and at the bottom it said, "Without you, none of this would have been possible. Nerds worldwide owe you big time. P.S. Superman Returns Ruled".
On his way out with a girl friend of his, I said, "Mr. Singer! I made you a stupid little drawing." He came over to me behind the bar, took the drawing, looked at it and said, "Oh my God!"
The girl said, "What? Oh wow!" (it wasn't that great a drawing, honestly)
Singer goes, "This is the coolest...I'm taking a picture of this! Even if I can keep it...can I keep it?" He then took a picture of it on his phone.
"Of course! I'm giving it to you."
"Wow. This is the greatest thing anyone has ever given me."
I laughed and said, "Haha, alright."
He said, "No. I'm serious. This is truly the coolest thing anyone's ever given me. Thank you so much. See?" He showed it to his friend. "It's true! We brought back comic book movies!"
I said, "Yeah, before you, there was Blade-"
"Right!" he said, "Blade! And then Men in Black, but..."
"...but that doesn't really count, no one knew what those comics were."
"Exactly! But yeah...X-Men did it. Wow. This is so cool. I can't believe this."
The girl then took it and said, "Superman Returns ruled. That's so sweet!"
Singer basically glossed past that and said, "Yeah, but this....I'm going to frame this. Seriously. I know you think I'm kidding. It's going on my wall. Thank you. Thank you so much. I really appreciate this."
I replied, "Pssh. Thank YOU! Thank you for all you've done."
"Oh, come on, whatever," he responded.
After that, we exchanged names, he asked for my email address, introduced me to his friend, who was pretty hot, actually, she's doing a show that he's producing, they're going to be in all the time, they complimented my drawing skills, we all shook hands like four times, I gave him postcards for my sketch comedy show, and he left, extraordinarily appreciative. Easily one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'm leaving stuff out, as it was all very, very flustering, we actually ended up talking for a little bit, to the point where all my coworkers couldn't believe it went that far, but still.
I met Bryan Singer and he was fucking awesome. Humble. Friendly. Funny. Nothing what I expected.
So that happened.

That's awesome!
It's always nice to hear when someone who's made zillions, and who has quite a bit to be up their own ass about, is actually a gracious, friendly, appreciative human being.
Sounds like you handled it the right way, too.

Singer's gone up 100% in my eyes. No way of telling how he'd react but Kevin did perfect. Just so awesome.

It helped that he was hammered and I had a little rum in me. The man can hold his drink, though, that's for damn sure. No flirting, either! That was extraordinarily nice. I didn't even get a gay vibe from him at all, to be honest. Kinda weird, especially when the ones you don't know are gay come into my restaurant flaming. Like FLAMING.

So this is some fancy restaurant where celebrities book days in advance, and you know what the bookings are?

It ain't fancy. It's a place where celebrities go for low key diner food. It's been a mainstay for actors and Broadway types since the 60's. And yeah, sometimes, the big ones make reservations, sometimes they just come in. Al Pacino likes to just hurry in and sit wherever he likes. He's the only person in the world allowed to do that.
