People seriously need to stop using that movie as a metaphor. How about this: JUST DON'T MAKE A BORING MOVIE. for you SR was boring for others it was a glorious masterpiece. I'd say it's a little of both.

I never thought I'd see the day when Lex would be the weakest link in a Superman film until I started analyzing SR.
Sure, Kevin Spacey did a great job with what he had. Sure, Kate Bosworth was technically the weakest of the main cast. But I feel I could easily overlook Bosworth's bad moments had Lex been more modernized and less cartoonish.
I just feel keeping Lex a buffoon and the lack of a powerful underling for Lex really kinda threw off the film's conflict.
In a sense, SR suffers a little from SIV's "good idea, bad execution" syndrome. I like that Superman and Lois had a history, but I didn't like the lack of action and the lack of a serious Lex.
It somehow worked for Lex in STM, who seemed like the kind of a villain in a breezy Cary Grant action film. It didn't work as well in SR.
I think the mishandling of Lex, along with the lack of action, is the movie's ultimate downfall.
But then, I haven't seen it in a while.

I'd definitely agree that Lex was the most poorly realized character. There were a couple of scenes that were great: the library and the Superman beat down; but yeah, other than that, he was a second rate version of Hackman's Lex. It's almost like they couldn't decide exactly what they wanted Lex to be. On one hand they hinted with a more contemporary version maybe more akin to recent comic renditions, but mostly they went STM with it, I guess to go along with the sequel vibe. As much as I like the movie, I do wonder why they didn't feel like they could give themselves more liberties in reinventing some of the characters.

To me Spacey is the best live action Lex. Easily. Loved him. He managed to be both funny and A LOT more menacing and evil than Hackman ever was. Plus Otis as a side kick is just..... sad.

Give me Hackman any day. I don't disagree with Spacey's casting, I just think the character's oddly written. I loved his few menacing scenes, but to me they didn't mesh with the humorous ones. He should've been total menace. To be honest, I take it all back. I guess that aspect worked out okay. I think my problem with Lex in SR all boils down to him being a land-grabber again. He wants land. Again. Really? You could've made him a scientist or a business man or a politician, but no, he's an aspiring landlord. Still. After a couple of epic failures and some prison, you'd figure he'd've found a new profession.

I see your point on land-grabber Lex in SR, belloq. They sure could have done something more in addition to that. I love the film the way it is, but I understand that for some it needed a bit more action and stuff in the third act. Oh well, it's history now.

I thought the action in the movie was fine. Third act was fine IMO. I just think they dropped the ball with Lex in a big way. So much so, I could care less whether they even use him again. Which is a shame, because he's easily my favorite Superman villain, especially the way he was used on TAS and early Smallville.

If Nolan wants the project to go the Batman Begins route with a synth type score, they need to get Steve Jablonsky of the Transformers movies to do it. Seriously. Scoff if you will, but I'm listening to the score, and a lot of moments in it, I can totally picture Superman doing some amazing shit to the music. The guy's gooood.

But IESB went ahead and found out that WB and Legendary Pictures are planning to release The Man of Steel at Christmas 2012,

Just trying to keep the peace.
Anyhoo, back to the subject at hand, I think a Christmas release would fit Supes perfectly. My only issue is, IESB hasn't been right about a damn thing in a long time.

Big team ups are just masturbation. you need a good story, characters and script. Load up the characters, and what's the story? And is there enough script for it to be more than just a bunch of one liners while taking out Starro or Kanjar-ro?
Internal logic is basically a way of saying think within the basic makeup of the original protagonist and its characters and crafting a story from there. Makes sense.
Hopefully incompetence and fickle bitch-like qualities from WB don't get in the way of Nolan doing his thing.

Absolutely. I can't help but think team ups will suck on the big screen. We're going to find out soon, Marvel is edging towards Avengers, you can bet Warners won't do sh*t on a DC team up script until they see how Marvel does it, and if it works out.
Which I doubt it will, would love to be wrong.
heck they just hired Nolan to oversee Supes, the man who is adamant heroes need their own universes to come across credible in films.

nolan can and will do whatever the heck he wants.
then, when he is bored with batman they can just say that somewhere in the middle of BB or TDK or whatever the batman joined the justice league. then somehow failed to refer to it in nolans batman 3 which is supposed to "end" batman. likewise superman, superman may be the "only" superhero in nolans superman flick- but at some point a lackey director can be instructed to use that superman in a JL movie.
if SIV and RDCSII and SR can all be in the "same " universe ( in spite of decades between them and 3 completely different production companies ) , and then even try to shoe-horn smallville into it then i for one wont sweat it when nolan says one thing and a WB stooge says another.

I take all this DC Film Universe talk with a grain of salt. This is what Jett from Batman-on-Film had to say about it and I tend to agree with him: www.batman-on-film.com/BATMAN-3_opinion-news_is-dc-wb-building-a-dcu-on-film_5-1-10.htmlThough as a "Smallville" fan I must say the reference to Clark Kent existing just not being Superman yet does intrigue me. I know they specifically said Smallville the place, not the show, but come on. If that really is the case why would you just ignore the past decade of Clark Kent growing up in "Smallville" when that puts him exactly at the place this supposed plan for the DC Film Universe needs him to be? Shall we start the Tom Welling for Superman campaign yet again?

^Are you insinuating that Welling still has a chance at playing Superman on the big screen??
That won't happen. His chances ended long time ago. Sorry.

Welling has been pretty "Super" as of late. He's kinda outgrown his "boyish" looks. He had to turn 32 for that to happen, but he is looking rather "manly". Not so "Sassy"! Of course, most of us (including myself), are still pulling for Routhy. I can still dream, right? Of course.

Was that a real billboard? Really? wow
And I'm sure Welling is not even considered for the part, maybe if he was this popular actor doing popular movies in Hollywood, and his show getting rave reviews and getting stelar ratings, but he isn't and it's not.
I don't think Brandon is being considered either, btw.
