It's supposed to be a really good story according to those who have read it. The movie is a very faithful adaptation but obviously a lot of character development, subplots, etc couldn't be included in it. I know that people like Josh Whedon (Firefly) loved it.
I recently bought all the volumes at my local comicbook shop. I'm almost done with the first book. Lots of fun. I hear that the story really get awesome with the third book and on. Give it a try, especially if you enjoyed the movie.
