If this new film is going to be a reboot with a completely new story, new guy as Superman, then I think it should stand on its own completely. So no more Donner/Singer influences in it.
And no more William's Superman theme either. Yes, I adore it, it's ICONIC but it belongs to the Donner/Singer Superman, imo.
So I say: BE CREATIVE. Show the world what you can really do.
What do you guys think?

Well, what we want happening and what will happen are two different things, I'm afraid.
Williams' music can't be topped. I'd prefer something like what Ottman did, but that's not realistic. So, something close to that. At the very least, something orchestral. What I definitely don't want is a huge difference like going from the Burton to Nolan Batman movies.
What we will get is a pounding, rock score that will attempt here and there to sound classical. But in the end, it will just sound like noise. Expect a Hans Zimmer knock-off (lots of them out there), Marco Beltrami or Tyler Bates and a lot of electric guitars.

The Superman cartoon by Ruby Spears used the Williams theme. Video games have used it. It's not exclusive to the Donnerverse.
I say make it like James Bond. Make the Superman theme synonymous with Superman. Live action, anyhow.

Arnold and Ottman share similar styles. I'd love to hear an Arnold Superman score, or even Giacchino.

If they keep the Williams' score, then KEEP Brandon too and the crystal FOS!

My preference would be to retain the main march, Superman motif and the Krypton themes. Jettison everything else. Even replace "can you read my mind" in the main march with a new love theme.
I felt the integration of the old love theme into Ottoman's score was the weakest part.
Williams' Smallville and love theme are of their time and specific to Donner's film. The march paid homage to all that had come before.
I would hate to see the march go.

Bond gets it right. All the soundtracks were products of their respective time but they all retained the theme we all love.
Then again, 6 years was the longest gap (so far; we were due another one next month, grrrr...)
It would be an almighty shame to discard that music.

Ottman did a pretty good job of integrating old & new- which would be nice, but as you mention, it's unlikely.
If they were going to trash the Williams music, then Hans would have been my choice.
We'll see.....

There's some moments in all his scores that have always kind of inspired Superman scenery in my mind.

Williams' Superman theme is as identifiable to him as the red and blue suit.
Change for the sake of it is not always a good thing.

I hope that something new can be done. Williams didn't feel restricted by other composers of Superman themes, so the next one shouldn't.

Count me in the camp that believes the the Williams Superman march is like the Norman/Barry Bond theme. It's the one thing that, despite getting variations, should remain a constant.

Agreed. Other aspects of the score can be completely different, but the march needs to stay

If Zimmer is going to score it then I will fake my own death and make it look like Zimmer did it...hopefully that will stop him.
Ok maybe that is going too far...

I would like John Debney or Elliot Goldenthal to compose the score but the march and themes must still remain. Even if they did change the score it won't be as good and never will be. Lois and Clark and Superman the animated series have different themes and they are weak in comparisons to Williams.

They can create new themes and stuff, but the Williams Superman march should remain untouched. That theme is is part of Superman the character, not just the Reeve movies. Just like the Bond/007 theme.
I loved what Ottman did for a score for SR and would love to see him come back, if not then Giacchino would be my other choice.
I can't imagine seeing a Superman movie, and not having the Superman theme playing in there.
Superman:TAS opening credits theme was a pretty good Superman theme. I have like a 2 or 3 minute version of it and it's quite good. Was it Shirley Walker that did it?

If the Batman/Nolan films are any indication, I don't expect them to keep the Williams' theme. Maybe a tiny bit in there but that'd be about it.
that's gonna be weird.. but then it will be equally as weird for me to see another guy in the tights so soon that isn't Brandon. ugh

The only guy I could think of that I'd want to compose a NEW theme is Giacchino. Other than that, give me the old march and new incidental music. Even if we only hear the march in the credits and once or twice in the movie during its most heroic moments!

I'd kinda prefer that, actually.
Make it worth it to hear the theme. And make it big. Make it grand.

With respect to the Burton/Nolan films...you had Elliot Goldenthal wedged in there. Besides Elfman's Batman theme didn't reach the same level of reverence that Williams' Superman did.
I mean, my god, The Superman March got a single release..for Superman 1 and 2...in various countries!
As well as all that I think Batman lends himself to and individual writer/artist/directors artistic expression better than Superman ever will - and people accept that.

Now, that you mention it, they sure did recycle a lot of Williams score throughout the sequels. I should give credit to Superman Returns for at least coming up with some new musical material, but still looking to Williams for all of the big moments. I think people tend to forget that the Superman musical motif (Dun-da-dun) has been around just as long as the character himself, starting off with Sammy Timberg's excellent main title for the Superman cartoons of the 40's. Every other composer beyond that took that same three note motif and made their own, including Williams. That's why I was a little puzzled when Donner apparently flipped his lid when Williams made the music say, "Superman." It's been like that since 1941!
