ok contemporary to S:TM and since then we have had several, often overlapping adaptations of superman.
let's review and see how well we did.
c. 1970's
THE SUPER FRIENDS cartoon
...uuuugghhhh!! ;D let's be honest- it was awful and corny. sure, the last couple seasons in the early 80's were an improvement, and it did spawn awesome action figures like MEGO and KENNER super powers but as an adult it's hard to watch without groaning.
but you know what? i'm glad we had it, aside from STM, this was where we'd see superman and in many cases the first time we'd see a lot of the other DC pantheon as we watched it before we could read!
c. 1980's
RUBY-SPEARS superman.
to be frank, it's still a bit cornball but definately an improvement over super friends.
the first cartoon made after the byrne revamp, too bad they didn't use byrne's character design, but whatev.
you may have forgotten, but TOY BIZ had made a (miserable pitiful) attempt to continue the kenner super powers line, with only the superman and maybe batman actually being any good comapred to the original line, but it did have the only action figure directly based on the ruby-spears cartoon, the lex luthor with a sport-coat.
( i am such a damn nerd)
SUPERBOY tv series
mixed on this, it is part of salkinds world, but i honestly don't think it holds up. i like gerard christopher, the show is corny/cheesy but had it's moments.
the hottest lana lang ever.
c.1990's
LOIS and CLARK tv series
definatley divided on this. i like the cast a lot. great pilot- but it just got too campy for me as it went on too long.
SUPERMAN TAS
aside from S:TM this has to be the best adaptation of superman like EVER- especially as it's connected to batman TAS and the JLU series- which was all very epic and character driven.
this is essential IMO, no superman fan should be without it- though i will gripe that it did not have the "polish" or production value that you would see on batman beyond or JLU. supe's needs more respect!!
another greta action figure line too!
c. 2000's
SMALLVILLE tv series
it has it's own thread so let's not jack this one. started out great. got dumb. lost track of it. heard it got really entertaining.
probably look into the last season when i can watch them all back to back.
JUSTICE LEAGUE animated
as was stated with S:TAS- this is awesomeness.
KRYPTO the SUPERDOG cartoon
..did ANYone ever see this? did this happen?
superboy and legion of superheroes cartoon
you probably forgot about this one. i seem to recall liking it and i have to think the litigation with WB and the siegal/schuster was what probably did this one in.
it started with an adaptation of silver-age superboy (kal-el, not conner kent) and then he disappeared arbitraily and was replace with a clone of superboy who had slightly different powers/look.
SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY animated film
meh, fun to watch once or twice. not much too it really.
JUSTICE LEAGUE : new frontier animated film
was superman even in this?
SUPERMAN BATMAN: public enemies animated film
i think i really like, but you had to be a comic book nerd to get it as it turned into a who's who flick with every character you can think of wondering in and out.
JUSTICE LEAGUE CRISIS ON 2 EARTHS animated film
again, was superman in it?
ultraman was and he was a douche.
SUPERMANBATMAN apocalypse animated film
really dumb.
but lots of hawt chicks and off-camera nudity. should have had ralph bakshi direct it.
batman brave and bold
really fun cartoon, and i THINK superman is (finallly) in it as there a superman figure in the line. could be wrong. he's like the ONLY DC character i haven't seen in it.
SUPERMAN SHAZAM animated
haven't seen it, heard it's good.
c. 2010's
YOUNG JUSTICE
off to a very promising start.
coming soon :
ALL STAR SUPERMAN
looks promising as well.
