wtf?
anyone read these? it was "rage of red lanterns" something something orange, then black. i have no clue, except DC direct made some very interesting (if dusturbing) action figures. two of which were superman as a zombie, one like a recent-dead zombie and one full-out dessicated zombie with a black superman suit. lex luthors battle suit is now...orange and has a green lantern-ish ring...cept its ornage...?
anyone know what the heck this is?

Yes.
Since they brought back Hal Jordan with Green Lantern: Rebirth, Geoff Johns has built an entirely new Lantern mythology. Basically, just as green corresponds to willpower and yellow corresponds to fear, there is a whole host of powers associated with the emotional spectrum.
It all led up to The War of Light in "Blackest Night", which is where all the zombie Black Lanterns came in. It's all very good.
Basically, just start with Rebirth, and then read every single GL trade that comes after it, all the way up til Blackest Night. These are the best Green Lantern comics ever published. GL finally has an encompassing, Star Wars-like mythology worthy of the concepts.
And I guaran-damn-tee you we're gonna see hints of this stuff in the movie this summer.

No. Marvel Zombies was just an alternate universe thing. "Blackest Night" was about every dead character in the DCU coming back as zombies wielding black energy power rings. And not just dead heroes or villains, the big problem was that anyone who had ever died that still had physical form was starting to return, so it was like swarms of Black Lanterns wiping out planets and shit.
Betcha if we get to Green Lantern 3 they do some variation on this.

Just start with Rebirth and all the GL trades are numbered after that, I think.
There's also the GL Corps series which runs parallel to this and enhances the overall picture, but isn't necessarily essential. It's still quite good, though.
If you just wanna jump in in the middle, start with The Sinestro Corps War (THE greatest GL story ever told, hands down), and then from there I think it's Red Lanterns, Orange Lanterns, then Blackest Night. But you're better off starting at the beginning, as Johns started seeding all of these concepts almost from the get-go.
These should keep you busy til the movie comes out!

i value your opinion on this-
been spelunking local comic shops lately ("local" being a relative term) and it looks like getting the back issues sets me back about as much as a honkin stack of trade- IF i dont mind the logistics and filling gapr. i'm old fashioned- i like the individual books, but i've been out of it so long ...
well, i'm reading one the first john's superman trades (ending battle) and i very much want to get through his new kryptin arc(s) THEN i'm going for the GL arcs.
...zombie superman... we joked about it when burton was on the job... ;D

Well, I hate to say it, but...
The Green Lantern stuff is far superior. The amount of world-building and care that went into all of this by Geoff Johns and Pete Tomasi is astounding. Now, granted, they've been allowed a free hand to do it for an uninterrupted seven year run (and going strong!).
It's a damn shame that nobody sticks with Supes long enough to do anything like this. The New Krypton stuff was clearly an attempt to duplicate the GL synergy, but is rushed and forced by comparison.

Everything Johns did for GL is ridiculously better than anything he did for Superman.
His GL stuff...FUCK. Just awesome. One of my favorites.
