Ok, here's the report! I would say there was easily almost 2,000 people there last night. More than I have seen for any other film on the Mall.
So in that sense, it was really historic -- This will probably be the only time the movie is ever played in this spot, and it has to be one of the biggest audiences it's ever been played for. (It was the 2001 version, FYI.)
Here is a very brief description in pictures:
Walking to the Mall while there was still daylight:

i33.tinypic.com/2vlwcoo.jpgScreen in proximity to the Capitol building. (My friends got there early, so we were probably in the front 10% of the crowd):

-Good crowd. Reeve's Superman is still loved. A lot of cheering, especially during Reeve's first appearance as both Clark and Superman.
-I don't know if it had to do with the size of the crowd or the relaxed open air setting, but people found the interview scene really suggestive. Like when he said "if I did, Miss Lane, you'd be the first to know about it" and "I like pink very much Lois," there were a lot of "wooos."
-People had a great reaction when the little girl got smacked, kinda like "did they really just do that??" And good laughter at the funny stuff too, like the Otisburg bit. ;D
-I probably don't need to tell you what happened during the "can you read my mind" sequence.
-People seem to be OK with the turning back time sequence. Even I'm starting to be OK with it, since it seems to be an original and creative idea.
All in all it was a blast. I'm really glad I went -- it was actually the first time I've ever seen in on a big screen, let alone a big crowd.
In closing, some random comments:
-The film already had some slow spots, I don't know why in the world Mr. Thau put that stupid scene with Ma waking the bird back in, or the fire, bullets, and ice scene. And speaking of, is that Otis making those Igor-like grunts?
-I never noticed how giddy Miss Teschmacher got while Lex was yelling at Otis in the ambulance. Weird.
-The big screen really called attention to those model houses near the end of the flood scene. How did they think they would get away with that??
Well, that's all I can think of for now. Thanks for reading!
