I'm suddenly curious about this since I've never seen it.
I was weaned on the STM/SII ABC cuts.
Is it an improvement? Is there any reviews about it? I know that the credits scene took place in space, but that's all I know.

Just check out the deleted scenes on the DVD or Blu. That's pretty much everything that was in the extended TV cut.

Only good thing about S3 extended is the opening title sequence, which is how a Superman movie is SUPPOSED to open. The rest does nothing to help the movie one iota.

Agreed. The credits in space, and the opening Metropolis montage w/o the titles. Liked that, but that's about it.

Is the credits in space included? I haven't checked yet.

No, that wasn't included, but here's a recording of it:
They used the music from the end credits, camera flyby whoosh and all. ;D

Without the credits, the Metropolis slapstick is even weirder

True.... but the whole movie is schizo from the start on.... (Plus at least it SORTOF resembles the first two films more this way)

This "extended cut" was an official video release in the UK in the 1980s in the rental market.

I remember seeing Vera been peeved at hearing that blonde sort doing the wild thing with supes.
I prefare the opening credits in space, very much so...I never liked the credits at all over the footage.
I would like this extended edit though...

I've gotta admit, I LOVE the intro to this version of the song. I love how it drags out before we get to the initial "theme". It builds up the moment IMO. What's up with the alternate version of those things in the b.g though? They look like the floating things from the STM space shots, but different.

The music at the start of three is pretty good, strings that build into the main theme during Clark noticing the man in the car until Superman steps out of the photo booth. Why not use that? (probs wont fit,I know)
-That scene is one of my favs of the entire series. I would love to see this without being spoiled by the credits...

Wow. Really? I had also heard that there was an official Japanese extended ABC cut on LASERDISC for both STM & SII--- have been searching for it for DECADES, with no luck..... (I did see a Japanese extended version on official laserdisc of Dune before the dvd release years ago, so that also gave me hope). But... odd that it's never popped up on ebay or ANYWHERE. Anyone know if this SII extended official laserdisc was myth or reality?

I never heard of the laserdisc but I know Superman III had a rental release with extended footage, I don't think it had the opening credits though. I have tried searching the bbfc website but they only have the film version and sell through vhs from 1987. www.bbfc.co.uk/search/?searchwhere=db&q=superman+iii

I have yet to see the extended 3. From all accounts it isn't much more from what we had in theaters. I checked out a while ago, but I wouldn't mind seeing the extended cut one day...

I have a pretty good one somebody made an iso of. It's missing the after dance cleanup though.

The best part of the extended was probably seeing the beginning credits separated from the opening montage, for me.
As an aside, I remember reading the script before the film came out, gotten from a convention. Knowing that it wasn't going to be Donner, l already lowered expectations. The biggest change I remember was Superman saving people from a forest fire rather than the chemical plant. It seemed more visual in the script than the chemical plant rescue, which always looked surprisingly flat to me onscreen.
I was open to seeing how a Superman III was going to work, being tongue-in-cheek from beginning to end, but outside of a couple of moments - I really felt like it was a wasted opportunity.
