Hulk 181---more for how I got it than what it is (although I am happy to have it for what it is!). I say a simple Ebay auction for "Hulk comics", I looked at it and it was a 10 issue run...174-184. I bid $50 raising the high bid to $35. I then contacted him asking if he would end the auction at $50...he did! Not only that, He referred me to Paypal which got me a $5 sign up bonus and I sold issues 180 and 182 for $35 total since I already had them. So, a VF copy of the 1st appearance of Wolverine netted me a cost of $10! Giant Size X-men 1---I was at a record (yes, records) store in Athens, GA, in the early 90s when...for some reason...I decided to open a drawer under the record display...in it was a box of comics. I flipped through them and found this issue. I didn't know what to do with it as they are a record store...I feared they wouldn't sell it to me or they may know the value. So...I stole it. Eventually got it CGC graded and it came back a 7.5 so I sold my 5.5 copy I already had for $350 (not sure how I got that one). I am about 24 issues away from having the complete run of Amazing Spider-man. Earliest one I have is #2...a G- copy. Latest one I need is #75. DragonCon is coming up to I should acquire a couple of issues there. I will have to think of more. EDIT: Hmmm.......I thought I was having deja vu... fortressofsolitude.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=comicbooks&action=display&thread=1120

Do you have any issues you are targeting? I have a crazy idea of collection every 1st appearance of every major Marvel character. It makes you buy some titles you would never think of purchasing.
And my quest for all Amazing Spider-mans continues.

Surpised that this topic got so few responses--- maybe it's indecision, from so many... In my own view--- I'd have to say that person favorite issues owned changed ever since they started making collected editions available for most things in trade paperback, archive edition, absolute edition, or even high-quality paper reprint---and now, of course, there are scanned versions supposedly out there of books from the past. Still, nothing beats having the original series of anything in its original form, ads and all, of course. (Used to love the mini house ads for other Marvel or Dc comics that would be in the extra ad pages in particular- a comic book version of a movie trailer). Personal favorite issues would have to be (off the top)- The 'Master of Kung Fu' Starlin and Gulacy issues- One reason was that it was neat to see the first (and only, really) asian superhero in an American comic. But to see the artwork and to have great writing on it blew me away--- the first issue is as solid as an origin story gets, imo. check out these scans: www.gulacy.com/marvel/mokf/mokf29/mokf29-color.htmStarlin's first few issues (originally named Marvel Spotlight) #15-17, and Gulacy's 1st and second runs at the character (it's fantastic to see a comic artist at the beginning of his career, and seeing the 'jumps' they make right away when they get into it- that DEFINITELY happened for Gulacy here)- #18-20, then when he really changed his style (for the better)- and the stories took on a James Bond feel completely in #29-31, #33-34, and his masterpiece 'final' arc in #45-50 are to die for, that I'd want to keep forever. Other ones...'Captain Marvel' arc by Starlin #25-33 and the crossover Avengers #125 (though, stupidly, they never added this into the hardcover archive) and the Perez "Sons of the Tiger" backup miniseries that never really soared, (nor appeared in a real color series, aside as supporting characters in Iron First) from the black and white magazine "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu" back in the day. (samples of Starlin's original art from that time: www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=297105&GSub=31489www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=117955&GSub=3622Also, on a more superheroic note--- lovingly collected the pricey (when I could save up for it) Neal Adams' old issues of "X-men" volume 1 (56-61). With the Avengers, issues #103-104 introduced me to the characters & in a great way--- battling the Xmen's Sentinels. On the DC side, the early Justice League #97-113 were what made me notice Len Wein's writing & appreciative of Dick Dillin & Dick Giordano's art (HIGHLY underrated), and also loved having them. While I love a good number of other stories, maybe it was the combination of the art, the cover, and the time that made these issues especially close to the heart.

I have Amazing Spider-Man 5 signed on the splash page by Stan Lee. He signed it "Stan Lee '86". I kinda wish I hadn't had him do that.

I kinda wish I hadn't had him do that. having things autographed is contraversial. to be used as "value" it has to be authenticated, and people are absolutely right to be dubious and skeptical. in fact, i completely understand the idea that and "autograph" decreases the value of an item. but, i never collect comics/anything for the real or imagined $$$ value. sure, i might pick up an extra copy of an "important" issue, but i like what i like and i only had martin nodell sign my green lantern comic, because i was there in person and i was overjoyed to meet him and and i have no intention of going to ebay with it. if i were you, an stan lee autograph, the you KNOW to be real on a spidey comic is a treasure. a real treasure. and i know you aren't in it for the ebay angle. someday your kids will treasure that item.
