Just read this great interview with the screenwriters of the upcoming Captain America movie, with (what I feel are) very similar creative challenges in writing a Superman movie- in regards to writing a 'pure' character that still would have to change and evolve on the inside.....but NOT change at the same time... www.aintitcool.com/node/50451To me, this interview really clarifies any problem a screenwriter for Superman might have in developing his character and giving him relatability and depth, over time. Even Mank was saying that Donner & him had thought about what to do next when they had a chance to go back to Supes, but were stumped, as they felt that they did everything.

Well, I think the comics are proof that more things can be done with this fantastical character. Sure, you can't change much of who he is at his core, but you can use varied external devices to challenge him. A son in mortal danger would be a really great challenge.. sigh, like you, I so wanted to see Brainiac vs Supes in a sequel.

I suppose it would have been a slight twist to seeing Lois in mortal danger for the billionth time Of course, they have to clear up all the muck about whose son it is..."Oh Lois, he's my son. See, we had sex but I erased it from your mind." Yeah, that will go over well.

No, she told him in the hospital. It's clear that she knows they did the Kryptonian Boogaloo at some point.

For a comic series that goes on forever- BUT - where the edict has to be: "no matter what, he always has to return back to square one"--- the stories definitely have a certain amount of handcuffs to them, which is why I think that comics like the X-men & all have a great luxury in that (if they chose to, aside from Wolverine) things and supporting characters/etc. CAN change and die.
With Superman? Never will anything happen to 'the main crew'--- with Star Trek, even they had more freedom in their series.
A deeper twist imo. The feelings for protecting an innocent related to to you (who is also not protected or guaranteed to survive in this fictional universe) versus protecting a reporter who jumps into danger over and over again have to be different.
It's also part of my point- that we KNOW nothing will happen to Lois/etc. Same for Jimmy & the rest. Giving Supes situations to grow (and not- like the screenwriters suggested was a possibility for Captain America's inner struggles- to 'flatline' as far as emotional growth goes, at a certain point) in will have to be a challenge for any writer.
If he has too many issues, you'd feel he's incompetent to handle life. If he has solved everything in his head about life, he's boring. So it's a challenge for sure.... and part of why I thought SR was great in that I thought it came up with a perfect solution.

;D
Yeah..... He loves her enough to be intimate with her, but not enough such that he can keep lying to her face as Clark Kent every day.
I have to admit, it would have been interesting to see how they would have filled in some of the gaps/holes SR caused in MOS....
(I have a hunch that he would have re-revealed his secret to her in MOS)

That would still be one heck of a dinner conversation with Richard White trying to explain all that. "See...what had happen, was....well, I was young...but I don't remember it..." NEXT ON MAURY....

At least it was a mind wipe and not them laying around in the fortress, and him say, "Yeah ... I'm goin' out for a gallon of milk and a carton of smokes. I'll be right back."
And the Kryptonian Boogaloo involves coitus, as Maude Lebowski calls it, upside down while floating in rain clouds. Yeah, boooy!

... Oh well, it's not my fault some people can't read between the lines.. some things don't need to be said with words, that's the beauty of cinema. Finally watched the movie- loved it, but Cap brought an interesting thing with it:
Both Captain America and Supes are supposed to be characters that command respect the second that they come into a room.
But....WHY?
In Capt. America comics and the movie, it's because of his fighting side by side with American soldiers during WWII. ONLY when he does, does he get the respect, by being in the trenches, and sharing the same risks without complaint.
With Superman- who is invulnerable- he's respected for his power and his actions. Same thing, but....
Personality-wise, the movie does something extremely smart, and emphasizes how Capt. America has insecurities on the inside, that pop up now and then- that he wouldn't be good enough to serve, fears that he wouldn't be in a place to serve, and has insecurities with women.
Because of his powers, Superman is always overqualified. But, he was born from a scientist and raised by a farmer. Captain America feels that he's nothing, if not a soldier. Superman seems more of a guardian than a soldier, more god-like, and more responsibility because of the magnitude of his powers.
Captain America would never give up in the film, even if he had no powers.
Superman, always burdened/blessed with powers, who exactly would he be without them? He's always half-alien, half-human, no matter what Pa Kent tells him. And that Pa Kent tells him that he's his son is maybe in a way Superman's salvation.
Essentially, Superman wants to be a good son & a good man like Pa Kent, soldier or no.
Captain America wants nothing else but to be a good soldier in the footsteps of his parents who served (at least in the movie).
I've always wondered, if, stripped away of the powers, if Superman's character was essentially Captain America.
After seeing the movie, I think there are similiarities, but they're not exactly the same character at heart.
