''...I told them to fuck off,a new Superman show was starting''. ;D that's the spirit!!
I was 12/13 when I first seen it,Saturday tea time and I was busting with excitement all day!
Episode 2 was really very good! The feds move in on Superman,L and C take a lie detector test, that was fun. (as it was in a previous episode of Superboy too) A bit of back story with the Kents on how they found Clark, the ship etc...Clark's space ship was very similar to that of the one in Smallville, complete with markings and symbols...
The suit had changed a lot, padded cape over the shoulders (reminds me now of Cavill's suit) The S is massive on his chest. I like the yellow S on the back, but without the black border that defines the S. Cain's hair is brushed back over as Superman and is without the side parton-curl...sound familiar??
Lois was adorable in this episode, she looked really tidy too. I have quickly taken a liken to Perry in this, great actor.

It kills me that the pilot was shot in widescreen (so was Smallville), but that WB never released it that way. Grr.

Just watched the boxing episode with Lois' dad.
Probably the best one I've seen yet. And Superman literally appears for all of 2 minutes in the last five minutes of the episode. The poker game with Lois, Clark, Perry, Jimmy, etc was really funny. Lane Smith has some great moments in this.
There's a moment with Lois and Clark in Perry's office where she's complaining that they're assigned to a sport story that is as good as any of the best Clark/Lois/Perry moments in the Reeve films. Cain really shines in this ep. Shea has some TERRIFIC Luthor monologues.
Only problem is it had one of those annoying "Clark playing sports" intros which are really over-the-top with the cutesy nonsense. Other than that, a nearly flawless episode. It really IS a show about the Daily Planet staff and Superman is an afterthought.

For the first season it was almost an ensemble show- not too dissimilar to 'Cheers', and I suprisingly didn't mind that, from how they pulled it off (although I do agree that Landes seemed too old to play Jimmy).
There are a couple of twists,(some liked, some not), but mostly felt like it was lifted right from the comics.

Just watched the boxing episode with Lois' dad. I clearly remember watching that on TV for the first time way back in late '93. Fucking 18 years ago

I think once you accept the fact that Superman in a secondary character in this,it's great. I'm totally enjoying that TDP is the hub of this show.
Seen the third episode of S1 last night. Luthor is annoyed that Superman is on every front page going,so he begins schemes to draw him out. Putting people in danger, timing how long it takes for Superman to react etc.
Lois cant find a good Superman story and steals one of Clark's headlines.
All this while Clark questions Superman and puts away the suit (which changes from one scene to the next, literally in this episode)and is convinced by Lois that the world needs Superman...
Really liking this so far,folks...

it may not have the best plot or villians for most of the episodes but ...... Dean & Teri's chemistry is top notch. If you watch it just for their chemistry alone, you'll find it very enjoyable. That's how i watch L&C
too bad they brought them together too fast & it went downhill from there. i'd think the creators on Smallville learned a lesson or two from L&C when they wrote Clana
loved how Clark is portrayed here, zero nerd & more investigative. But then again i'm not surprised coz he's the main character rather than Supes

Never saw a complete episode of this. Cain just never did it for me as Superman. Thought he looked wrong in the suit. BUT, he's really cute nonetheless ;D and it sounds like the show was pretty decent for a while. Gonna try to find the dvds cheap.

For sure, start with the pilot. It has a LOT of charm, and the pilot was the best- There were a couple of clever episodes that I thought matched it for quality in the first season, but after that, it's pretty uneven- a little TOO light and silly at times. The first season had the best balance of seriousness and comedy imo.

Luckily, if you don't care for Cain's Superman (I don't) he's only in the suit for less than five minutes an episode!
His Clark is terrific, though! Very likeable and believable. A different take on the character, to be certain, but very cool.

Just watched the episode where Sam Lane had been creating 'super-men' for Lex,using them as boxers, one of which took on Superman.
Superman went to punch one of them full force, but stopped and just flicked him on the head. haha, price less.

love how that episode ended with Clark training alone in the boxing gym. It's little gems like these that, tho they dont serve the storyline but merely to show Clark having fun with his powers, that make the series likeable for me.
i still remember clearly & am very fond of seeing other gems like him playing baseball, table tennis all by himself, & a one-on-one basketball with Bo

I gotta disagree. I find the sports segments excruciatingly cheesy. The baseball one was particularly irritating. BUT...it's ok. Cain is so damn likeable in these segments and is so clearly having fun (unlike, say, Welling) that I can excuse it.

Hmm,interesting scenes. Yea,I quite like them. Sending the punch bag across the room was excellent. A full pelt punch!
Also, when he ran on the spot creating a minor earth quake forcing the antagonists to flee the building.
Lex creating an army of Super-men sounded very familiar after 10 years of Smallville... But,I like that they were more mechanic than Kryptonian.

I always really liked the little solo Cain segments at the beginning and end of some episodes, cheese or not.

Watched an episode last night where Lois works as a waitress/entertainer in a local bar. 'The Metro Club'. Quite good, enjoyable.
All the bars along the waterfront were being torched to make way for ''Lex Harbour''. Superman went up against The Toasters!!!

Last few episodes have been great, really enjoying this. Cant believe I have left it for so long,I just had it marked down as being a bad.
But,as I have said, once you get used to the idea that Superman comes after Clark, it's fine. Moreover I really like the Kents in this, very good idea to have them booth around for Clark.
last one I seen was where there was a heat wave,it was being blamed on the use of Superman's powers. He was arrested and had to live with Clark.... all the while it was Luthor's doing.
Some great scenarios in this season...

Thing with his parents for me: thought K Callan was a very good updated (and realistic) version of Ma Kent - the Father though, was fucking horrible. Who did he blow to get into showbiz? He made Dean cain's Superman seem as expressive and animated as Jim Carrey's 'The Mask' in comparison

Just watched a great episode. Clark sees a vision of Jor-El through touching a globe which he found a few shows back. The globe called out to him,and Jor-El tells him he should appear five more times. The globe gets stolen during a robbery of Clark's flat. The kid responsible then sells the globe onto Luthor. Luthor then sees further visions of Jor-El and Lara via holding the globe,(a riff on the crystal control panel I thought). as they prepare to send the baby to earth. Clark also sees these specters each time Luthor does. He learns that he wasn't left, unwanted. He was saved as krypton perished. So,Lex now knows that Clark was raised as a human, amongst them and he now plots to discover who raised him and hold them to his mercy. I love, just love seeing another take on the origin scenario. The costumes of Jor-El and Lara were not a far cry from Brando's and Yorke's in STM. Silver/white with the S and a finish around the tunic neckline. I must have missed that episode before,as a kid. Really good. I'm surprised it hasn't been used during documentaries and features before. Thought it was really good. Anyone else here seen that one too??

Carrying on with season one.
It starts off in the DP,all of the staff are gathered around the TV watching the news as a plane is going to crash in Paris. So,Clark makes his excuses to leave,as he does,Superman saves the plane while Clark is still in the DP...
Lex used a lock of Superman's hair to create a clone of Superman... (Superman IV's original concept, anyone?)
It was good, kind of reminded me of an episode of Superboy when Bizzaro wonders why Superboy wont harm him. ''Your me,your my brother'' scenario.
Was pretty good. Think I'll get this season on DVD,it's worth it I reckon.

Kev dropped by yesterday, and suggested we watch some L&C. We decided to watch the Season One finale/two-parter.
It was pretty much brilliant.
Cain and Hatcher's chemistry is just off the scale in these episodes. Their arguments have some real bite to them. Their lovey-dovey bits are really convincing. They really, really shine. heck, so do Landes and Smith!!!
And LUTHOR! God damn. John Shea IS the greatest live-action Luthor. He's a charming Bond villain here. And he's PHYSICAL. Running, jumping, kicking-ass, shooting guns. Great stuff.
Very little Superman, even by L&C standards, but more than made up for with a tightly written plot that involves the Planet staff doing actual investigative journalism. This really IS L&C at its best. You take Superman out of it, and you have a smart, fun, newsroom drama with just a little bit of an edge.
And, c'mon, we get Superman in a Kryptonite cage in one of Luthor's secret lairs with Luthor gloating over him. That is one of the all-time great iconic Superman images, and Cain and Shea really do it well here.
Cain's Superman is still awkward, but his Clark is off the charts. I tell ya, though...Cain's Superman suit does him no favors. I think his limitations (the arm-folding, the touching the side of his head when he's in pain, etc) would be far less GLARING if he was wearing a suit as good as the one Gerard wore on the Superboy series.
Anyway...the way this ends, you can almost pretend it's where the series ends. It's great. It's better than EVERY episode of Smallville. I heartily recommend revisiting Season One of this show. It is a PERFECTLY faithful adaptation of the Superman comics that were being published between 1986-1994 or so. You can't say that about very many interpretations of Superman. AoS felt more like the Golden Age Superman despite being around in the Silver Age. The Reeve flicks brought Superman's power levels down to a more manageable level than the Superman in the comics from the 70s and early 80s. S:TAS was really its own continuity.
Great stuff. Just great Superman television.

Hand touching his head in pain? ;D Not to often you hear that complaint. He did seem to have that reaction every time he was around Kryptonite. Very Shatnerian.
You'd think the SR complainers would point out that Kryptonite cage thing by now. I always figured that should have killed him considering how much it was and how long he was in there.
Shea was a great Lex Luthor but I never could get past the fact that he seem to actually LOVE Lois. Never seemed to me like that should be in Luthors dna. Always took him for the time who would "love" a woman for the same reason Julian McMahons Victor Von Doom "loved" Sue Storm.
I really liked when Shea played the "underground criminal" Lex Luthor. He was one of like...three good villains on that entire show in a sea of bad ones.

Interesting point about the Lex/Lois relationship. However, he WAS being written that way in the comics at the time, so it made sense that this show transferred that over. The difference is, the post-Man Of Steel comic version of Lex was a bald, middle-aged, lard-ass. Shea is debonaire, charming, handsome, etc.
I could buy that Lex loved Lois on L&C. I had a little bit of trouble with Lois' feelings for him. Never quite bought that. And Clark straight up calls Lois a whore like TWICE in these episodes because of the Luthor thing. It's kind of hilarious!
