Man that sucks. I hope they catch the A hole that did it and throw the book at him. Stealing is bad enough but to take the one thing that is worth more for its sentimental value and brings a little joy in someones life is really low.
If the cops know who did it there's a good chance they can track down some of the stolen items. Hope they find it.

I'm sure I've got some random Superman stuff that I can send to this guy. I'm sure some of you folks do, too. I'm gonna have a browse and see if there is something token-worthy I can send.

The quote at the end of the article nearly killed me. The Save Superman page indicates that additional pledge drives are being planned to take place around the U.S. The page is also updated regularly with news about the police investigation and also remarks from Meyer, passed on through his friend Bill Smith. The latest from Meyer is as follows:
"I have never felt so much love in my life; I no longer feel like the Frankenstein monster. I feel that people understand me now, for the first time in my life."
Meyer added a quote attributed to a Superman comic fromt he 1960s:
"Do good unto others and every man can be a Superman." Read More: www.comicsalliance.com/2011/09/09/mike-meyer-superman-theft-help-donations/#ixzz1XU8AxRH5

I really like that quote.
It's really great to see Superman fans uniting to help this guy, it's a good feeling.
I really do hope they catch the bastard that did this.

Val, you wanna pool some shit together? I've got a bunch of things I can do without, Superman related. I went to Midtown and meant to ask if they were doing anything for the dude, like taking in items or whatever, but I forgot to.

"It Happened One September" - A True Superman Story
by Chris Brockow
Mike Meyer of Granite City, Ill. is a big Superman fan and collector. His collection is said to be worth around $5000. One day Mike ran into an acquaintance, Gerry Armbruster who persuaded Mike to invite him to his home.
On August 31, Mike came home to find a major part of his memorabilia gone. Mike was so distressed that he told his friend Bill Smith and then the media got involved. Once the story hit, Dan Ryno, a member of the Superfriends of Metropolis, posted the story on the Facebook page. That started a group called "Superfriends Collection to Benefit Mike in St Louis".
The Superfriends are a huge group of Superman fans who go to Metropolis Ill. every year for the annual Superman Celebration. When this story hit Facebook, their hearts were full of compassion and they had the desire to help out another Superman fan. I am proud to say that I am part of this group.
The Superfriends came together and started sending out Superman items to help Mike rebuild his collection. Some of the items were their own property, and some items were bought just for Mike. Keith Howard was taking donations for Mike during the first half of September. Keith collected more than 60 packages and with help from some of his friends, they delivered them to Mike at his home Saturday September 24.
"Next, our plan is to first go to Mike's workplace (McDonalds) and then follow him to his house to make the delivery," stated Keith. "Also, Bill Smith was the person who initially encouraged Mike to go public with the news story. I did coordinate later interest with the media however."
Keith was the one who proactively got the local media involved. Mike’s story was in the newspapers, radio news reports, TV news and of course the internet.
In my opinion, this event is so much like the movie “It’s A Wonderful Life”, that I am sure that Mike Meyer felt like George Bailey. Can you imagine a stranger like Keith showing up at your house dressed as Superman and giving you packages that The Superfriends of Metropolis sent you?
Unlike the movie, this actually happened to a real man and real people had compassion and reached out.
There is another happy ending to this story; on Friday September 16 the suspect, 37-year-old Gerry Armbruster of Granite City was arrested and all of Mike’s memorabilia was recovered.
Mike should feel so Blessed that not only did the Superman community support him but also Gerry was caught and his original collection was returned. He now has so much more than he could have ever imagined.
"Mike has already indicated that he is so moved at the outpouring of support that any duplicate donations he receives, he wants to donate them to St Louis Children's Hospital the next time I make a visit as Superman," said Keith. "That's really cool. I spoke with a reporter today (Thursday 9-22-2011) who just did a follow-up story with Mike and he told her that the reason he wants to donate to Children's Hospital is 'George Reeves used to make visits to children in hospitals.' I guess Mike, like the rest of us, has been affected in a positive way by the example of Superman."
Mike was very surprised to see everyone show up at his work, he thought everyone would go to his house and he would miss the entire event. Mike was happier than Jimmy Olsen was when Keith showed up in his George Reeves Superman costume.
Mike said to Keith "This is as close as I will ever be to meeting George Reeves."
To Mike I will quote from "It's A Wonderful Life" - "Remember No man is a failure who has friends."

Super Superman fan gets a call from the new Superman himself
SUPERMAN RETURNS: In addition to the 350 some gifts and letters that have been sent to Superman fan Mike Meyer in response to news reports about the theft of his comic book collection, the Granite City man recently got a call that meant more than some.
He picked up the phone last week to hear the voice of "Superman Returns" star Brandon Routh, a 31-year-old actor and former model originally from Norwalk, Iowa. The two talked about — what else — all things Superman for nearly half an hour.
They touched on the making of the "Superman Returns" movie, the theft of Meyer's collection (which was subsequently returned when police made an arrest in the case), Meyer's memorabilia collection, scenes from the 2006 movie — which Meyer said he has seen 14 times in movie theaters and many more times on DVD — and past actors who have played the role.
At one point Meyer told Routh that he sounded like the late Bud Collyer, who was the voice of Superman and Clark Kent on radio, film and television in the 1940s and again in the 1960s.
The conversation closed with Meyer telling Routh that it was "an honor and a privilege" to have spoken with him.
Meyer, 48, lives off of Social Security checks for a mental disability and his pay from a part-time job at McDonald's. He lives alone with his dogs Krypto and Dyno and spends a lot of his time on his lifelong passion — his Superman collection.
.. During the last week in August, Meyer was tricked out of more than 1,800 of his favorite Superman comic books. After news reports about the theft, comic book collectors spread the word online via message boards and email lists and the letters and gifts began pouring in for Meyer. www.stltoday.com/news/local/columns/deb-peterson/article_caccc26a-ea0a-11e0-928d-001a4bcf6878.htmlAwesome.

who's that guy in George Reeves' suit standing next to Mike? Sure looks John Hamm-esque
His face looked just right if they're making a movie of an older version of Supes

some might think Routh's got nothing going for him except SR & the call is just a way for him to get into the spotlight again i'm glad he doesn't think too much of it or is self conscious abt it & just called the guy. That was a kind gesture on his part

just to wrap it all up nicely, in case you hadn't heard. most or all of his original collection was recovered, so the additional material that was donated to him, was in turn donated BY him to a local children's hospital. great story.

While it probably isn't suitable for the character, wouldn't have minded if the story ended up with the Superman cosplayers beating up the criminal for truth, justice, and all that stuff as well.
