With the new movie looming, I decided to revisit the Millar/Hitch Ultimates series in its entirety.
What an incredible turd this series is. What an unbelievable, mean-spirited, hate-fuck of comics and fandom that this is. I can't believe that ANYONE (myself included) ever thought this was good, let alone great (then again, around the time this was being published, I also thought invading Iraq wasn't a terrible idea, so clearly I had been infected by judgment-inhibiting spores of some kind). It's not quite as insulting as The Goddamn Batman, but it's pretty bad. I don't know what's worse: Millar's super-annoying shock-value writing style or his incredibly obvious, in-your-face, "secret messages" about politics. The whole thing is asinine.
And Hitch's artwork isn't that great. Yeah, I said it. No sacred cows. Him and Jim Lee. Beyond overrated. The Led Zep and Fleetwood Mac of comics.
ugh. I need a shower.

Not knowing a huge amount about Marvel I was advised to read 'The Ultimates'. I was told if you enjoy the recent Marvel movies then the Ultimates is a good read....WRONG!
I agree with most of your opening post, to be honest. I did like some of the character interaction and it made me curious about expanding my knowledge on some of the characters, but overall I was very disappointed.
You can leave your brain at the door when you go to see a movie, but I expect to feel involved when reading comics and 'The Ultimates' is about as engrossing as a sloppy turd. It makes you wonder just how sloppy that turd is, but when its all said and done, its still shit.

It's funny to see how much the Marvel movies have borrowed from all of this visually (especially Nick Fury), but they were smart enough to avoid all of the obnoxious "subtext" which is SO IN YOUR FACE that you can't even call it that.

Millar lives off shock value more than quality storytelling. He thinks shock and crassness is a good substitute for other kinds of entertainment. The Ultimate Avenger animated movie improved o the Ultimate's comics in a lot of ways.
Kept all the good stuff and left the trash on the curb.
Speaking of shock value I never saw the point of the incest talk about The Ultimate versions of the Maximoff siblings.

Yeah, that's one of those things that annoyed me from the minute they started it. What the heck is the point of that other than to be "adult"?
Never managed to see the Ultimate Avengers animated thingie. The other Marvel animated projects I saw were more than enough. Although Planet Hulk was alright...

Liked the first Ultimate Avengers a lot. Didn't care much for the second. Most of the Marvel d-t-dvd's fall int he range of pretty good to mediocre. I thought the best efforts were Planet Hulk and Hulk Vs. Doctor Strange and Thor Tales of Asgard were decent. Next Avengers was better than I thought it would be
Invincible Iron Man was terrible. The worst of the bunch IMO. They used some of the sh*tty ideas Arad kept pushing for the live action movie ten years ago.
