Tim Daly, as most of us know, was the voice, and perhaps the BEST voice, of Superman in the animated series.
As some of you know, I work in a restaurant where A LOT of celebs come in. Christ, I talked to Alan Rickman tonight for fuck's sake. But Daly?
I took his reservation and immediately drew a picture of Superman for him when he came in. It said, "The best thing Superman has ever said:" then it showed Superman saying, "I'm sorry, Lois, but your monkey friend is going down." Truly one of, if not THE greatest thing Superman has indeed ever said.
I dropped it off at his table as I was leaving for the night and walked by after and he pulled me over. "Since you took some time to do this for me, I feel I should tell you to look up The Daly Show on YouTube. Superman plays a big part of it." I told him that I'd check it out and how I've been a lifelong obsessed Superman fan. He was extraordinarily courteous and friendly about it all. It was fucking AWESOME.
So, I met the voice of Superman tonight. Whoopee!

Daly was a brilliant, perfect Superman. And he coulda done it live-action around that time, too! He woulda been great! Imagine if he was the lead in the first season of L&C?

Sweet. Daly (even as a voice) was a better Superman than the last 3 live action guys combined.
Too bad he didn't come back for Justice League. Not that Newburn was bad but Daly was on another level.

If I had to rank Superman Daly could EASILY be in the top 3. Certainly in the top 5.
After Reeve its a photo finish between Reeves, Daly, and Collyer.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with that ranking.
Newburn, I felt, really grew into the role after the first season, and by the end he was pretty much perfect. However, unlike Daly, he never really had to play Clark all that much, and I think that's important to become one of the greats.

Ditto. The Superman character was treated kinda crappily in season one. By the last season of JLU Newburn had become so much better and Supes was written with the proper respect.
Number 5 is kind of tricky in my top 5. I guess if we count Superboys it might be Gerard Christopher. Routh was ok too. But Beau Weaver is f*cking underrated. The Ruby Spears Superman was the shit.

I always felt that Season One of Justice League they went out of their way to show that Superman wasn't some all-powerful guy who could just get the team out of jams. Consequently, Supes got taken out early WAY too often. Once they stopped trying to establish that, or they got comfortable with Supes' power level, things got better. And, of course, later in the show we got some of the best Superman moments EVER.
Your all-time Superman ranking is intriguing.
