ok folks. This is your all-time Superman list. You can include anyone, including voice actors, Superboy actors, as well as from the films. Here's mine, pretty much in order of preference.
1) Christopher Reeve (I suspect we'll see an awful lot of him at the top of these lists)
2) George Reeves (love him, especially those first three seasons)
3) Bud Collyer (the voice of Fleischer Superman and radio Superman)
4) Tim Daly (S:TAS. Daly would have been a great live-action Supes in the early 90s!)
5) Brandon Routh (we hardly knew ye...)
6) Dean Cain (brilliant Clark, a bit off as Superman. I will say, his take is completely unique)
7) Gerard Christopher (his perfect, stepped off the comic page look and physique MORE than make up for a sometimes stilted performance. In terms of having "the look", he's almost as good as Reeve or Routh)
8) John Haymes Newton (a bit wooden as Clark, but a great no-nonsense Superboy)
9) George Newburn (might rank higher if he had to handle the dual identity role a bit more)
10) Kirk Alyn (a fun, physical Superman, but not authoritative enough. His Clark is a bit over-the-top. Overall, he's got a great look and athletic build.)
Honorable mentions: Beau Weaver (Ruby Spears Superman), Tom Welling (I still wonder how things might have been if the show wasn't so god damn mopey)
For the record, 1 + 2 are nearly a tie, but Reeve takes it on sentimentality alone. 3, 4, 5 are essentially a tie, and could change based on my mood. Same with 6,7. The last three are pretty much right.

My list is the exact same as your so...carry on.
I always thought Alyn and Cain were better at playing Clark Kent than Superman. Cain looked uncomfortable and stiff as Superman and Alyn just came off as kooky at times.

I thought about it a little more, and made some minor amendments/notes.
The various SuperFriends voice actors, while all good, aren't distinctive enough for me to bother including them, but if somebody feels differently, please put them in your list.

I think Danny Dark was the only guy to play Superman during Superfriends 12 year run. I might be wrong though. He was ok but I always thought it was funny he had a pornstar name.
I think Reeve and Reeves COULD potentially be flooped around purely on preference instead of talent. They're both great. I give it to Reeve myself since he had the better look and a larger physical presence. Thats how I picture Superman in my mind. But Reeves charm as Clark AND Supes is incredible
When I "hear" Superman in my mind as I read he sounds somewhere between Reeve and Daly.
Collyer deserves his spot because of the duality he first brought to the role. Pretty much everyone else who tries it owes him.
I thought mark Harmon gave it a damn good try in Crisis on Two Earths but since that was a one off its hard to rank him anywhere. I liked Kyle McLaughlin too.

Tim Daly is who I hear in my head when reading the comics. God he was so good. I'm glad he is still doing the occasional dcau movie.

He doesn't take having been Superman lightly, it seems. I'm pretty sure he's honored to do the voice.

As I get older, I appreciate Reeves' brilliant serious (and lonely) CK in seasons 1+2 over Reeve's dorky CK.
I can't add Routh as he was impersonating someone else rather than doing his own thing (he wasn't close to his potential IMO, a shame). Say what you will about Dean Cain but at least he never made you think of anyone else.
Alyn gets sympathy from me cos he was the first and didn't get as much reference material as the others, plus he had a lot of hokey lines. Reeves blew him out the water though.

Dean Cain's a weird one, I absolutely loved his portrayal of Clark, but to say he was a bit off as Superman is being generous, i'd say his Superman was horrendous at times. Bizarre, superb as clark, poor as superman. I couldn't see how anyone could have anyone other than Reeve at the top of that list

There are basically two camps for Superman/Clark when you really think about it. The Bud Collyer camp and the George Reeves camp. Almost everybody's take on the two can fall into one of those groups. I'd place Daly and Cain closer to the Reeves camp. Sometimes the writing on L&C left Cain looking like a fool since Clark or Superman acted so out of character. Reeves always came off as a smarter more savvy Clark Kent. ok folks. This is your all-time Superman list. You can include anyone, including voice actors, Superboy actors, as well as from the films. Cain somehow managed to make him MORE stiff. he never was at ease in the suit as Reeve or Reeves. Take a drink whenever Cain folds his arms. His supposed fear of heights often hurt the flying scenes. I know they could have doen better than that for some of the wires stuff even on tv.

gerard christopher was up for SUPERMAN in lois and clark but they passed because they wanted distance from previous versions.
too bad. while i don't dislike dean cain, he was a bit awkward in the tights whereas christopher very much wanted to do it.
i don;t think either of them is that amazing of an actor.

Kevin Sorbo was also up for Superman on L&C. The way he talks it was damn near his. I forget why he claims he didn't get it.
I thought he would have been a great tv Superman. he was a bit long in the tooth though.

For movie or for tv? I never really saw him as having the gravitas for a Superman movie. By that point he was getting pretty old And pretty banged up from Hercules. Then again he did Andromeda but that role wasn't nearly as physical. For tv its never seemed to be as strict. I mean I can't imagine Cain in a Superman movie for example. He never seemed like a movie star.

I just revised my list to put Cain ahead of Gerard. Why? See my latest post in the Lois & Clark thread...
Like I said, some of these are so close they're practically ties, and can change at will.

You should do a list like this for Luthor or maybe a separate Clark Kent one. The results of that would be much more diverse. Do a Batman one too.

My Batman list would be awfully short! Conroy/West/Bale. Nobody else.

My Batman list would be awfully short! Conroy/West/Bale. Nobody else. Really? I figured you'd at least like Diedrich Bader from Batman: Brave and The Bold and Bruce Greenwood from Under The Red Hood. Personally I though those guys were damn good. Just do it from the best to the worst then. I'd love to see you're list.

Bale would be quite high on my batman list, but thats only because of Clooney and Kilmer.
I still think Bales batman is pretty horrid.

My list would be the same as Val's, but with a big gap between 4 and 5. I like Routh, and I wouldn't have minded seeing him get a chance to grow into the role in sequels, but based on Superman Returns alone I can't put him in the same league as Reeve, Reeves, Daly and Collyer.
heck, has there ever been a really bad Superman? I can't think of one. Even the lesser ones like Dean Cain and Newton had some really great qualities, despite some of their weaknesses. I feel bad for beating up on Cain so much back in the day; yeah, his Superman was sort of an odd anomaly, but his take on Clark was completely unique and he brought some genuine warmth and charm to the table. I think his only real weakness was his Superman voice; it didn't have a lot of authority to it.

He actually came to Hollywood to be a screenwriter- which automatically gains him a lot of points right there. He also had a lot of interesting thoughts about what he wanted to do with Lois & Clark on his L&C commentary, I believe. (Going off of memory, it's either commentary or the bts stuff)

I remember that one episode of Lois & Clark that he wrote...wasn't that good. The Toyman one with Sherman Hemsley. I think he wrote another one but I can't remeber what that was. Maybe it was better.

For Lois & Clark's standards, I found the ones he wrote entertaining enough. They weren't masterpieces, but the show itself was always pretty modest in its appeal. When the show works, it's a lot of fun and charming, but I don't think any episode really floored me.
