I recently downloaded series 2, 3 and 4. I had only watched the first season when it came out briefly and during some repeats and obviously the dvd. I had heard good things about the later seasons of Superboy so i had to hunt them down, took me awhile to download these series!.
Series 2:
With the slight change in cast it still feels like the first season but with a different Superboy. It still feels very cheap and the blue screen work seems worse then the first season?. The style of writing is the same it pretty much as the same plot for every episode with a change in characters. He looses his powers etc then gets back at the end. It does introduce more comic book villains with was a step in the right direction. The direction in this series try's to amp up the action and it works in some episodes but still feels very amateurish. There is one episode were Superboy is paralyzed and has to use a wheel chair, it was a bit weird to see but it one scene made me laugh. He gets pushed out a window in his wheel chair and is spinning around and around in it as he falls. bloody hilarious.
Series 3:
This season is definitely the best of the bunch. The writing is far superior to the previous seasons. There is some great episodes to be found in this series. The show is a lot more darker in tone and how its photographed. It feels a bit like the Flash TV show mixed with a bit of Dick Tracey. The writing deals with more adult themes and many of them have a very twilight zone feel to them. The best episodes were - Roads not taken, Mindscape, test of time, body swap and Mine games.
Series 4:
The style and tone is the same as the last season but the stories seem to have reverted back to the style of season 2. There was only a couple of episodes i enjoyed in this season but as whole It was a bit of a let down.
In regards to the flying effects. The later series use a lot of the live action wire work which is great!. There are some great take offs and landings plus some normal flying shots from point A to point B, the blue screen is really bad in the Gerald Christopher episodes. I do feel John Haymes Newton was actually better at the flying scenes. He seems to compose his body better with the take offs and landings.
