Buy this RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
Finally, we're getting these awesome archival editions of Carl Barks' Duck stories. I had never read these until now, and they are BEYOND WONDERFUL.
You like the classic Donald Duck cartoons? These are better. Liked DuckTales? This is WAY better (not to mention the inspiration). Love good comics? These might be some of the best.
Let me put it this way...when I think of the finest comics ever produced, very few of them are superhero comics. Sure, I LOVE superhero comics. They are 99% of my comic book collection and knowledge. But when it comes to the purest storytelling, the comic stuff that I think truly elevates the art-form, and could work on any number of levels, it has historically come down to two things...
1) Will Eisner. Especially The Spirit. Eisner does more in an 8 page spirit story than any of the best in the business these days can do in 8 ISSUES. There is never a wasted brushstroke. Every background character has a soul. These are perfect stories.
2) EC Horror/Sci-Fi/War Comics from the 50s. Most famously Tales From The Crypt, Vault Of Horror, Weird Science, etc. etc. These are some of the most tightly plotted and best drawn comics of all time. Again, more gets done in 8 pages than in 8 issues of most superhero comics. Essential stuff.
I can now, after just reading this single volume, safely count the work of Carl Barks in this list of absolute perfection. You can give this to an eight year old as a storybook featuring Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck. Or you can read these stories as an adult and magically turn into an eight year old again while marveling at how perfectly crafted and drawn a short story can be.
