Hope you enjoy it... or at least, don't entirely hate it. I like it, there's a lot of good in the picture, and there's reverence and respect for the main character (maybe a little too much... idk). But as has been noted (and noted, and noted, and noted again because what the heck else are we going to talk about? Star Wars?), it has a lot of problems. But hopefully they won't ruin the film for you.

It's a great Superman film, but I'm pretty sure you'll hate it.

I finished the film too late last night, to write my views on it coherently.
So here it is.
I didn't hate it.
I didn't love it either, but it wasn't the painful experience I thought it would be. There were lots of thing so to enjoy, but lots of moments that didnt sit well with me either.
To start with the things I liked, the plot itself was actually very interesting. The 'kryponited' version of krypton made in the ocean. I liked that idea, I think to myself that could have been a good plot for the original Superman III - rather than the bilge we got.
Acting performances were generally competant across the board and I liked Perry's nephew not eventually 'turning evil' as I expected him to. Langella, as has been said, played down Perry significantly, reminding me of Jason Robards in All The Presidents Men, but the character wasn't really in the film enough.
As far as Spacey goes, he had the unenviable obstable of trying to fill Gene Hackman's shoes as concerns a big screen Lex Luthor, and it just wasn't possible for him, his acting style is completely different, Hackman nailed the role for me, he is the quintessential Luthor, Spacey's 'shouty' moments didn't work - and his band of henchmen were poor - was that one of the blokes from Harold and Kumar I saw? Spacey did what was asked of him, and delivered some decent lines, but a Hackman he is not.
As far as Routh goes....well, look, the guy TRIED his absolute best to embody the role, I appreciate I crucified the guy just because he had the temerity to take a huge career defining role just because I didnt want to see Reeve's portrayal trampled on. I was of course, unreasonable. You cannot blame the man for taking the role, and doing what he could with it, but I don't beleive the script did him any favours, the dialogue as Superman was pretty weak, and there just wasn't enough of him playing Clark to let me see how well he took to playing Clark, which is the test of any actor playing this role. He gave it a go, so I'll lay off him in future.
I thought Bosworth did an ok job, just she looked like a teenager, with a kid too...bit silly. Bloke playing Jimmy did fine.
The things I didnt enjoy were firstly, I thought the overuse of Williams music, while with good intentions, didnt work, it had been too long for those cues to work in the 2000's era, they belonged back in the era that originated in, everytime a Williams cue came on, I longed to see Reeve and Kidder...the opening credits, obviously a nod to STM, didnt have the same feel of overall majesty, that the movie you are about to see what going to be monumental. There should have been an original score for a new era. But I appreciate Singer was trying to show respect.
The Supes and Lois flying sequene was a big fail, cheer the fuck up would ya Lois? You're flying with Superman! Having a struggling-with-her-feelings-for-Superman Lois in this scene took any emotional impact out of what is usually a special moment
I also had problems with continuity, if this is supposed to continue from the end of Superman II - then why is there a question about Lex's sentence? He was an escapee from his current sentence, he'd have just been returned to prison, with no possible chance to appeal after having been convicted of launching two missiles intent with mass genocide.
Would the Superboy have any powers? Clark would have concieved the child while he lost his powers, so he wouldn't have any, right?
Why has Lois written a Supes bashing article when he amicably ended their union in Supes II, he didn't run away from their relationship, and why would this win the Pullizter prize when the world clearly adores Superman
There were some other things but they've slipped my mind now
I didn't like the use of Brando, no-one else should ever bear witness to the 'I am your father' scene but Kal-el, having Luthor see this was really cheap and tacky, I didn't like it. They also messed with the order in which he said things and the pace he said it at, I don't like Brando being messed with!
Also, the ultra-violent kicking in of Supes seemed not in the spirit of Superman, it was more akin to seeing a West Ham fan coming across three Millwall fans. I found that the whole movie seemed bleak, and not fun, Reeve films were fun!
But all in all, it was a worthy attempt. I fully expect next years film to be far, far better, but nothing, and I do mean, nothing will better Reeve.

Make that 11 fold
Another thing I didn't like was Superman's voyeuristic tendencies, I think he was abusing his powers by listening to private conversation with Lois and his bloke.

To be honest Hurst I always thought your reason for ignoring SR were very lame.
In saying that, you can rest assured you ain't missing anything and theres no chance of any reasonable person ever watching that and thinking its better than STM ;D
Edit: Just noticed you actually watched it.
I disagree with you about Bosworth, she was fucking awful!

Well, you gave it a shot, that's what matters. Some around here wouldn't (didn't, I should say) even do THAT much.

I'm pretty sure Superman has stalked Lois in one way or the other in every version of his incarnation.
How did he know were Lois lived in STM?
He did it for sure in Lois and Clark a few times.
The comics? Forget about it! He knows her HEARTBEAT.

I think its just the idea of seeing him hide in the bushes and spy on her that made it bad.
He'd have been aswell standing there with one hand down his pants working his cock

Really? I thought I was the sole hold-out. Well, I didn't mean for Superman Returns per se. F it. Talking about Johnny Boy and Trek '09.

There are things I thought were disappointing with SR, but different from the ones that you mentioned.
The second Superman film I'm sure would have been darker, had Donner stayed on & the original Mank script used.
Having said that, I agree that there could definitely have been more 'fun' moments perhaps with the montage of Superman going around the world and being perhaps more imaginative/inventive (like in the silver age Superman comics) with the 'easy' rescues/ saves that he performs around the world or a number of the superheroics he performs in the film, without ruining the basic arc of the storyline. (ie Could he have wrapped the uber-machine gun into a pretzel around the robber? Held up the globe two seconds longer and posed for Jimmy as he took a picture? Maybe moments like that.)
With Snyder being a real comic book geek (I'll give him credit for that), if he DOESN'T have any clever 'superhero action bits', I'll be greatly disappointed.
Suprised that you didn't see the movie previously, though. Do you feel, though, after watching this, that had there been a sequel, it would have been far better?
