Nearly six years now. I'm quite proud of myself in some ways, that I stuck to my word.
But I am about to admit what everybody knew about me, that I am a hypocrite
With Nolan involved in the making of the next Superman film, I feel myself compelled to see it. Despite everything I've said about anyone but Reeve daring to don the cape.
If Superman Returns proved anything, its that Reeve will never be forgotton. I was wrong in my fears that the new generation would embrace the new one and forget the old...if anything, its only heightened Reeve's standing.
So if I am to watch The Man Of Steel next year, I had better see SR now, I've told my fiancee that I am relenting...she has had to honour the ban herself...in honour of me. So I may watch it this weekend. I watched the trailers on youtube, Spacey's attempt at Luthor does look decidedly weak.
It shall be interesting.
Boring being this mature I reckon...

Nowhere near as boring as the film.
I think SR did a grand job helping a lot of fans move on from the DonnerVerse. Maybe after you see it Hurst you may feel more comfortable about the legend moving on from Reeve and Donner
Besides, its been about 35 years since STM

Watch it with an open mind. There is plenty to like about it. (plenty to dislike, as well, but that's another story).
It's a loving tribute to the Donner/Reeve era. So, even when it misses the mark, it's not pissing on anything you love, y'know?
After all these years, I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this. And try not to read the threads about it on here until after you've seen it...

I will not read anything.
It may have been 35 years Ye5...but I think STM gets more magical witrh every passing year, what they acheived in the late 70's with a smidgeon of the technology they have today, its mind blowing, some of the best film-making talents of our time worked on that movie.

So, i'll rate it as one of the best films of all time? No, you will think it will be good as the movie of the week on the Lifetime network.

So, i'll rate it as one of the best films of all time? Not exactly...more like a more boring knockoff. With a kid in it.

Yes. YES! FINALLY! You're seeing it! I can't wait to hear what you have to say.
The last time I watched it, it was pretty rough. There's a lot of shit in it. It's got a good amount of lame in it, but the good definitely outweighs the bad. There's some amazing, beautiful stuff in there. The score is topnotch, to boot.
But yeah, it's...gonna be interesting.

Ha. My report of this is gonna be an event. Akin to God talking to Moses, to paraphrase Perry White.
Speaking of which...Langella, my HERO after making Skeletor literally in the top 5 villains I have ever seen on screen - as Perry, thats a good sign.

I've encountered many people in the Superman TV and movie realm at my new bartending gig. Langella included.

Just to let you know beforehand Langella downplays Perry compared to John Hamilton, Jackie Cooper, Lane Smith, etc. Its a much more reserved performance by Langella. It wasn't the Perry I loved and but I thought it was ok and understand why they went in that direction. It was a damned if you do damned if you don't kind of deal with JK Simmons basically playing a similar kind of loudmouthed blowhard editor named JJ Jameson.

Langella is old school, theatre trained and capable of genius. He was ace in Frost/Nixon I thought, and he made the MOTU movie far greater than it had any right to be just because of his own performance which is up there with anything I've ever seen

He was great in Frost/Nixon. I've got a review of that I'll be putting up soon. His performance was a little bit of a caricature at first but once the movie got going it became more natural. That tends to happen with Nixon though. Anthony Hopkins had the same problem.

I guess because Nixon himself was a caricature. Langella embodied the role. I especially loved his delivery of the line 'if the president does it, it's not illegal'
Top notch

Langella I will always look upon as Skeletor. The same for Max von Sydow, whenever I see him, I immediately think of 'Ming the Merciless'.

The Superman Returns segment of "Look, Up in the Sky" documentary made me laugh, when Spacey describes Langella as "bringing new clarity" to the role of Perry White. What's that supposed to mean exactly? Sounds like a diplomatic way of saying "dull" to me.
On the other hand though, MOTU, now he was quality in that.

I especially loved his delivery of the line 'if the president does it, it's not illegal' Top notch Nixon was a character but the various interpretations of him over the years have been exaggerated. The voice being the most obvious thing people overdo. But people often focus on specific things like that to put accents on the performance. What Langella got right was Nixon's personality. About the only thing Langella did was make the character more down to earth and normal but not overdoing the typical loud overblown Perry White personality but he didn't bring anything new to the table. I anything some people found it less entertaining.

I think it was a foolish choice to make Perry more controlled/restrained.
Keep Perry the same, but change the concept for (real estate-driven) Luthor- not the other way around.

I would have preferred a more classic Perry but I can see why they changed it. I think it was wrong but like I said they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't.
At least Langella wasn't "Lenny"...or bizarrely obsessed with Elvis...and he wasn't Lenny. Lane Smith was still better though.
In hindsight Singers first choice Hugh Laurie may have been better. It still would have been different but he has a great wit on House. The fact that he had to drop out did more harm than anything to the character in SR.
