Listening to the commentary for Martin Scorcese's "Raging Bull", which arguably has the best fight scenes in film history. Scorcese had Jake LaMotta (the boxer that "Raging Bull" was based on) choreograph the fight scenes with Robert Deniro--- then, of course, Scorcese chose how/where to place the camera.
Leads me to think... If Donner had stayed with SII--- and knowing how collaborative and open to suggestion Donner was to his actors- makes me wonder even more how Donner might have been able to stage the superhero battle in the skies if he were able to get Jack O'Halloran (a real boxer), Reeve, and himself to sit down and come up with ideas.
If Donner could get Reeve and Kidder to work with one another without kiliing one another, I have no doubt he would have been able to have Reeve and O'Halloran to do so, too (after all, in the extended cut, Non does physically throw Supes to the ground).
Donner may or may not have used O'Halloran's experience as a fighter to form the superhero battle in the skies, but in watching the amazing fight scenes in "Raging Bull" and hearing it came together, can't help but imagine it taken to another level in a superman movie....

Would've been better than shaky cam with grunts dubed in later, right?

I wouldn't trust O'Halloran to get me a beer from the fridge, let alone choreograph a major fight scene
There's no boxing in SII is there? Having the character punch the shit out of each other might be too much for little kids.
Like how Lester and Furie did?

Have you seen the videogames kids play nowadays? I think they're pretty used to seeing fictional characters punch one another without too much trauma...

Yeah, but we're talking 30 years ago. Kid's weren't so immune to violence then (at least I wasn't!)

The original statement has a winking smiley face. That means I'm not totally serious. Maybe read more carefully next time... They had "Empire Strikes Back" at about the same time--- Which is (generally speaking) pretty intense, and kids were fine with Luke's hand being sliced on camera by a lightsaber.... if they could handle the moon attack fine- I think so long as it's not THAT much more intense than that, that they could deal....but in the end, it's all speculation. (*I'm not saying that we need buckets of blood like "Raging Bull"--- just coming from years of having to settle for the lackluster Lester Supes battle- and trying to figure out ways to restore the battle--- I'm just saying that what 'could have been' might have been REALLY amazing then.)

You don't see anything in ESB, which is why it had a U certificate
Violence doesn't automatically mean greatness.

Of course not- but Lester slapstick during a confrontation that was built up from over two movies doesn't mean greatness, either.
ESB had a lot of humor as well as dark drama, and showed that you could do both without being over the top. I don't fault SII for having humor, but the excess during the more involving scenes was pretty irritating. (If push came to shove, I could forgive the other bits--- but the worst offense imo was the Metro battle)

I don't know what a U certificate is... But I forget at times that the boards are worldwide--- In the US, you DID see the hand get chopped off onscreen, not sure about other releases...
