I saw the preview, too, Val. Truly, truly horrible. Why call it Shazam if you're ripping out the guts of what it's about? And since when is Billy Batson a 'troubled teenager'? Geoff Johns has been hanging around that "Smallville" tv set a little TOO long, I think!

I think Johns has lost his touch.

Well, everyone's going to have their 'hits' and 'misses', but considering how weak the JLA is/was AND these choices--- I remember just being enthralled by his "Flash" and "Teen Titans" in the beginning, and thinking: "wow, I'm hooked- I"ll pick up anything this guy writes"--- Even moreso with his "Superman" stories- To....cut to recently, yeah, seeing Geoff Johns stand on stage for an hour with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively talking about how great and fantastic the Green Lantern movie is, with a straight face. And now JLA and 'dark' Captain Marvel. *sigh* On the flip side, maybe it matches the choices of also removing Lois as the love of Superman's life and taking away his underwear, too....

This - imho - is an artifact of one of my first apprehensions for "new 52"- (And wait till you see golden age flash ) - that you have. A) too many titles aNd b) too few architects. Jim lee should not be redesigning. Every character! Say what we will about electric superman that at least was ONE submitted concept from several. Contributing artists! Jim lee has become a formulaic hack.

I have to admit, I'm looking forward to it. I'm a fan of the Cap, so I am sort of excited to see him back proper in the DCU. Ever since Infinite crisis we really haven't had "Billy" the way that we should.
Also, speaking of bringing back characters to the DC, bring back Kord for Fuck's sake. It's been 6 years, it's a new universe. Let's bring him back put him in a Book with Booster. Have Jurgens and Rupmund work on it and it, Call it "Blue and Gold" and be done with it. There is no way that wouldn't sell (relatively speaking of course, comics are selling like shit in general).

Love ted kord beetle!
heck - i'd take a book like the late 90s starman the anchored around one version and then dovetailed previous versions. I'cd love to see ted kord connect with his predecessors....

Yeah.... the thing that's really killing it seems to be the digital age- Just got listening to John August, professional Hollywood screenwriter talking about MOVIES dying out, because no one seems to need to physically own/buy dvds (or have the hunger to) nearly as much anymore--- I can only imagine a similar shift with comics--- Most of my young relatives who are into comics have NEVER read a print comic....and from talking to them, many of their peers apparently who are into comics read them on the web and nothing else, too.... pretty sad for the industry that needs new customers.... o well....

BUT, he's definitely showing up in Grant's "Multiversity" series next year...

I don't always agree that characters need to be gritty and disturbed to be appealing to audiences. However, in 2012 if your moniker is "The Big Red Cheese", you might want to re-evaluate your image.

I totally agree--- in the beginning that was Marvel's innovation to contrast with DC superheroes, but now 'gritty and disturbed' has become a cliche and has spread over to DC characters where it may or may not apply.
In Shazam's case--- I think of all the characters it WOULDN'T fit..... this seems to be the one. Moreso than Superman!
Odd that Geoff Johns came up with this. In interviews, he's usually the one that seems to embrace what the fundamentals are of the characters, and tackle them with the right touch.
Now, it hasn't come out yet, so maybe he HAS come up with a clever way to do it that we don't know about--- but, on the surface, this doesn't look like the right approach.
Curious enough to check it out, though....

I...
did not hate this?
I mean, there's a pretty dick-y start to it, and I'm not sure how much I care for this particular twist, BUT...I dunno. I didn't hate it. I'm intrigued. And man, that Gary Frank artwork DOES look pretty on the printed page. Even that one image of Captain Marvel Shazam that we saw on the web that I didn't care for, actually looked pretty bad ass up close.

I liked it quite a bit. God I love Frank's work. And none of the faces weirded me out like Frank's work can do sometimes. Billy's behavior once the foster parent's leave is horrible, and I didn't like the characterization at all. Hopefully we don't have to deal with that for too long. And sivana = lex luthor more than ever. A little too close, let's differentiate a little bit. Though I will say that I wish Luthor in Action looked like Sivana here. I don't really like how Rags has been drawing Luthor, something is off there.

haven't read it yet, but saw a promo drawing in an ad in a recent Nu52 comic. meh. uhhmmm...why again did we have jim lee redo ALL the costumes? i could see the books he's actually do- or charcaters from wildstorm ..but ALL of them? maybe he never noticed that captain marvel ALREADY looked like SILVER AGE FLASH! they had nearly identical suits before- now they look even more alike! solid red suit. yellow/white trim. lightning bolt on chest. yellow boots.

The characterization of Captain Marvel in "Young Justice" is perfect. If they'd just use that as a template I'd be excited about reading his adventures. Not too enticed at the moment but I guess Justice League #0 will be the true test of what the New 52's Marvel is all about.
