I think when all is said and done, I've ended up preferring the theatricals to all 4 films.
If the RIC cut was presented in w/screen HD then it might been a contender, but all it does is remind you "what could have been" which reminds you of the "Donner" cut, which leads to "fuck it" ;D
Donner cut: Anti-Lester strategy and re-use of music kill it completely for me. I'll never see it again.

But doesn't Lester's version generate those same feelings
I say it has the advantage of being the version we've all grown up with.
If it was released today, we'd lambast the ridiculous humour and the plot-hole of Supes getting back his powers without explanation.

Not to me; as you say we grew up with it
Yep, movie audiences are different today as they were back in 1980. Its a film from another time.

I wonder if that one reporter who printed that quote from Donner was the 'straw that broke the camel's back' so to speak..... If the quote from Donner never saw print.... wonder if that would have led to the Salkinds and Donner managing to make some arrangement to finish work on SII even with the arguments. Such a pity.....

Each of the theatricals has moments that have me hitting the 'fast forward' button on them...
*STM- with the Luthor/Otis material (sometimes)-
*SII- portions of it have been painful to watch/sit through even through the very first viewing, (Most of the Lois/Clark stuff by Lester; the Metro gags in particular)-
*SIII- Most of the stuff that doesn't have Reeve in it-- (which is half of the film)
*SIV- It's so chopped to pieces, that there's not much you can fast-forward through-
*RDC- See above....
I actually agree w/you about the edit strategy to just fast-forward through the Lester stuff, make the pacing go 'fast fast fast' and psychotic music editing almost all but destroy the RDC......
The only thing that I'd really look forward to is a better professional recut of the RDC that addresses all the things we didn't like about the edit to the RDC, but...unlikely....

The music is awful in the RDC, made a mockery of Williams genius

Films are catered for lowest common denominator these days, dumbed down/instant gratification etc.

I see the music editing as pure incompetence, versus intentional mockery. I remember listening to the commentary for "Family Guy" for one of their Star Wars' parodies--- and them talking about the difficulty of editing the same Williams' music cues to fit the timing of what was onscreen.... so, apparently not that easy--- and I definitely respect and understand why a 'new' score is so invaluable to a movie experience after seeing the RDC...

Could have just used Ken Thornes inferior score then, I don't care if they abuse that.

It was cool to hear the alternate Williams music placed throughout the film. I thought that the music during the Paris scene where the policemen are placing the plastic explosives was Thorne's original music. It turned out to be an alternate version of the mugger cue from Superman I, which was utilized during the moon scene.

I thought the re-use of the 'fortress building music' when zod & co escape in II was excellent.
