Ok, I'm posting this up because my GF wants to know, I've made her watch Superman all weekend, including both Lester and Donner's SII
Basically, she wants to know why the main crystal at the fortress is green when green is the colour so often associated with Kryptonite, wouldn't it have been less confusing to be another colour?

^THIS^
Thank You.
I've said this for YEARS.
Green was a RETARDED choice.
Every time I've ever watched it with a noob, they're always like "Isn't that supposed to hurt him?" Even as a kid I can remember my mom asking me why it wasn't killing him ;D
I always thought Blue should have been the obvious choice.

hmmmm...
Good points.
Green, in general, IS associated with Krypton, not just Kryptonite.
I always just assumed that it was a nice contrast with the white of the fortress.
But yeah, blue or red would make sense.

What Val said. The color just seems to be broadly associated with Krypton. Look at the color Jor El and Lara are wearing in Byrnes MO: Green. A lot of the flags and silver age outfits were green.
It IS something thats pretty confusing to newcomers though so they should have seriously considered changing it. I agree that a pale crystalline blue would have been better.
When the fortress looks "damaged" it also has that green glow = death. So when you think about how the green crystal is his salvation it looks more odd.

Agreed... Although, out of all the choices, I'm glad they avoided the plaid.

When the fortress looks "damaged" it also has that green glow = death. One of the better changes when Lester took over and reshot things. I also liked the "Australia" transition and "would you care to step outside". Lester's cut had less passion, but it had more objectivity.

I remember being so confused by this as well when I was a kid. Honestly it didn't have to have any color at all. What differentiates this crystal from the rest is that it glows white hot. Whereas the other crystals are crystal clear, this one should have been frosted white with an internal glow. That should have been enough, and definitely more symbolic of representing Jor-El's life-force, a guiding light, and the white surface of Krypton.

I never really thought about it or had any confusion. After all, the green crystal is established well before kryptonite is, and is given much importance. We see Jor-El place it last on the spaceship, we see it unearthed from underneath the Kent farmhouse and we see Clark throw it to create the FOS.
S2 even does the audience a favor and reminds us visually about the green crystal in the opening credits - quite thoroughly.
You guys are racist against green crystals. They all look the same to you! ;D

Agreed.... (aside: Thau's main contribution to improving SII I think is tinting the moon stuff blue. Sadly, that's about it from what I can tell)
Though- if looking at STM- that's a movie that's fantastic with transitions. (Even the much praised BB and TDK don't have the best transitions... some are pretty abrupt).... I know some feel it's giving too much credit to Donner/Baird, but I think if in that time frame, similarly we would have gotten just as good/if not better transitions had they stayed on.....

One aside: one of my friends asked me how I could tell the difference visually between Chinese, Japanese, and Korean..... (I was born in the US, my dad was born in the US, but my mother is Chinese)-
My honest answer about how to tell the visual difference between the races? heck if I know, the similarities are a bit too close for me, too. Just have to ask the person, because I can't tell the difference just visually, either!

I honestly never gave the crystal being green a thought. The only thing I can possibly hypothesize is, since red, blue, and yellow are the colors of Supes' costume, the didn't feel like having too much of the same color and green was simply next in line.

I actually thought about alternatives--- but I was almost seeing the minuses with other colors: Green generally has the association of life, despite being connected to kryptonite... Red generally has the association with death (and debt) Yellow is.... pretty weak as a color Blue might have been ok..... or too close to the other crystals' look to stand out Purple. Brown, and Orange as secondary colors also seem a bit funky... Maybe green was the best choice after all..

I remember watching STM with my dad and asking him if that was Kryptonite, and I remember he said, "No." and being slightly confused.
Dude, I must've been like 6 or something.

I think you guys are gonna get your wish in MoS. It appears there's some kind of magic Kryptonian tech that is blue...

Kryptonite is from Krypton. The crystals were made, most likely, from the minerals found on Krypton.
I don't see the issue. In fact I think it is awesome.

Kryptonite is a radioactive metal. The crystals are...uh...crystals. I agree in thinking they could have made a better color choice. Blue makes more sense to me because it represents the color of his suit. Why would the thing that helps him look like the thing that weakens him? This is probably the reason Superman Returns avoided the big green crystals. I think you guys are gonna get your wish in MoS. It appears there's some kind of magic Kryptonian tech that is blue... Thats the thing to hold off all the rape zombies on Krypton.

Could CGI be used to change the crystal to blue? Please?

Although, it's possible that MOS has no crystals at all in its choice to reboots. Maybe it'll bring back the twirling ugly balls (Oh no! Not... the Omegahendron!) as its key power source for the planet.
