Thought came up during the threads about Hackman as Luthor....
During Star Trek: TNG, cast members were switched at the last minute as better fits, and thought: how bad would some switches have been if applied to the Superman movies? We've 'heard' Terence Stamp as Jor-el, and that seemed to work pretty good....
* Gene Hackman as charismatic, seemingly jolly Jorel? Brando as the mumbling, dark Luthor?
* Margot Kidder as a snarky Miss Teschmacher? Valerie Perrine as a seemingly cheerful Lois Lane?
* Ned Beatty as Jorel?
Ideas?

Its pretty hard to do since everyone was a pretty good fit for their part
Faye Dunaway as Ursa and Sarah Douglas as the witch Selena
I wonder what Pamela Stephenson would have been like as Miss Tessmacher.

True, true... one of the great things about Donner's films was just about spot-on casting via Lynn Stalmaster.
Pamela Stephenson as Tessmacher....interesting! Working with the collaborative Donner, wonder if she would have been allowed to do more with the role...
Hackman as Jorel- I think would have worked as Krypton's greatest scientist- but Brando (despite not seeming to care about the project in the beginning at all) definitely gave it a quiet authority--- probably helped by the other actors in the scene who were genuinely in awe of him. While Hackman can play the 'everyman' pretty well, he also is magnetic when he's called on to play a role of command- like in that submarine thriller with Denzel Washington (I forget the title).
Brando as mumbling Lex Luthor..... As a mumbling madman--- this could have worked, even if it would be 180 degrees from what Donner came up with. Might not understand what the heck he's saying, but he can do insanity pretty well...
Stamp as Luthor might have been interesting, even though he owned Zod, too, I think.... (Not sure who in any of the Superman films would have been able to replace Stamp)
hm....

Larry Hagman as Lex Luthor ;D JR Ewing was pretty villainous./ I'm kinda joking on that one though.
I wonder what Peter O'Toole could have done with the role of Jor-El. Brando was obviously a better choice but sh**..its still Peter O'Toole!
EG Marshall as Perry White is another one thats on my mind.

Hmm... VERY interesting! Hagman is a great actor. Even though he mainly was in tv, he would have been fine as Lex, playing both the comedy & drama. O'Toole I think is pretty much the same in EVERY film he's in--- but, you're right- the man is a legend in his own way. Given the two choices of Brando vs. O'Toole, I think I do prefer Brando. EG Marshall as Perry White would have been fantastic....but burn that damn wig he had in SII! Bleaugh!

O'Tool would have been a bit more dandyish as Jor-El. More like a Dumbledore Jor-El.
I don't see a Brando Luthor working to be honest, unless the role were made more serious. I can't think of many roles where Brando has had to 'do' comedy. Brando suits Jonathan Kent better than he does Luthor IMO.
Pamela Stephenson practically was Miss Teschmacher in a different form, so she definitely would have worked.
Faye Dunaway as Ursa . . . interesting! It would have been circa her turn as the icy career bitch in Network.
How about Jackie Cooper as Jonathan Kent and Glenn Ford as Perry White?
Mark Pillow as Superman??

Agreed on a lot of these- As mentioned, O'Toole does the same thing in every role. (Much like Christopher Walken most of the time)
Cooper as Kent and Ford as White would have been interesting--- they're both playing decent guys at the core.... but on the surface, think I would have preferred both as are.
Brando Luthor WOULD have to be changed totally..... or the delivery of his mumbling unmemorized lines would have been so odd, that I think it would have totally taken you out of the film. (I don't buy Brando's argument that he thought not knowing the lines made for a better performance- based on everything reported by Donner and Stamp & all, he just did the whole thing because he wanted the money and was pretty lazy about the whole affair, even if he enjoyed it later on)
