I was watching some of the old 70s Spiderman videos today, and it seems to me that Nicholas Hammond could have looked pretty good as Superman. He did have that annoying big floppy hair (typical 1970s), but if you ignore that and look at his face, he looks pretty good. He's got the same classically chiselled kind of features that Reeve had, and his eyes are the right colour too. If his hair was dyed black and styles right, he could have looked pretty good in the Superman costume. What do you think? Please? On a related topic, I can't believe Hammond is 62

Nope. His voice kills it, although it suited him well for Spider-Man, which is the voice I always hear when I'm reading those old Ditko and Romita comics.

It's funny you bring that up. Hammond DID have a sorta Reeve-ish shape to his face, particularly his nose and eyes. I have trouble seeing him as Superman, but mostly because I associate him so heavily with Spidey. That old show is so watchable almost entirely because of Hammond's EXCELLENT and sincere performance. He really embodied that college age Peter Parker of the mid to late 70s perfectly.

Reeve and Hammond really were childhood heroes.
I was such a big Spidey fan back then all because of that show (more specifically the video releases of the "movies"...Spider-man, Strikes Back and Dragons Challenge) as there weren't any comics nearby.
I'll always be fond of the show, and always think the portrayal of the character as Hammond played it is more relatable to young kids than anything since.

So good to see love for Hammond.
I watched Deadly Dust RELENTLESSLY as a kid.
I hoped Hammond would play Spidey again, but...

Such a shame that Stan Lee disowns the 70's TV Show. When Tobey was Spidey on the big screen, I was hoping for repeats of the Nicholas Hammond episodes on the TV or a DVD release. Sadly it seems not to be...

If y'all wanna port this thread over to the Diner and make it a live-action TV Spidey thread after everyone's chimed in on the Superman issue that ATP has raised, I'll talk about this show all day. I love it. I realize that much of that is just novelty and nostalgia, but...

I remember being thrilled with the tv pilot back in the day.... and getting a little bored waiting for 'the good stuff' (the action/costume stuff). I kept wondering, 'why isn't there more costume stuff going on'? But, nowadays, with info on the costs involved..... not surprising how little superhero stuff there is/was for many superhero tv shows back in the day. As far as Hammond vs. Reeve for Superman.... I don't know enough about Hammond's acting skills or his training. Lookswise, they do look similar. But I think it's safe to say that 'classical training'-wise, Reeve was probably overqualified (thus, why he probably just saw Supes as a stepping stone for his film career rather than something that he dreamed of as an ultimate role) for most of the folks auditioning for the role (Although the dentist was probably more qualified in another area if there was a dental emergency on-set.) as his acting resume at 25 for theatre was already pretty sharp.

Not sure he would have worked as Superman but he was a great Peter Parker. He was better at playing the 70's Peter than MaGuire was as the Ditko inspired Peter. The 1977 tv Spidey suit was closer in spirit to the comic book suit than ANY other live action version.
Hammond was REALLY underrated. If there was any justice he'd have a role in the new Spidery reboot. Maybe as one of Peters teachers or a colleague at the Bugle.
Stan Lees like Arad sometimes...which sucks. he can't always see the value in certain things. The Incredible Hulk tv show wasn't exactly like the comics (less so than Spider-man 77 IMO) but those guys would never complain about that because it was so successful.

I loved the heck out of Hammond's Spidey and seriously would love to see them again. Its been about 25 years since I last saw them.
He looks there he could make a good Bond too.

I still think Spider-Man Strikes Back is the best live-action Spider-Man film. That's no CGI Spidey hanging off that helicopter. The new film looks like they're going to be minimal on CGI and more reliant on stunt work when Spider-Man is web slinging, something that was VERY noticeable in the Rami films.

I'd love to get to the bottom of why the series isn't released on DVD yet. It's been 35 years since the pilot!

As much as I *looooooove* Hammond as Spidey, I just don't see him as Superman.

I'm not sure if Lee has had any real influence in ANY of Marvel's decisions for a LONG time, though.....

I've always held on to my opinion that the 90s Spiderman animated series' Parker was drawn based on Hammond's look

I think one of the people in charge of the show admitted they based Peters design on Hammond.
