Got my girlfriend to watch STM for the first time. She thought she had seen it before and when she said it'll be weird seeing Teri Hatcher from Desperate Housewives as Lois Lane, I said that's Lois and Clark she remembers seeing! So we watched (accidentally) the original 138 minute release, which in comparison with the longer version, is so well edited and quickly paced, the film raced by and I realised that Chris Reeve was hardly in it when you think about all the time given to the Krypton and Smallville intro, and the scenes with Gene Hackman. It's only when you think about all 4 Superman films as a whole do you realise how iconic Reeve became and how impossible it is to distance the actor from the Superman character. He just embodied Superman so perfectly! Looking forward to showing my girlfriend Superman II next week (the Lester original version), followed by Somewhere in Time for a more romantic mood.
PS - I don't think I can put her through S3 or 4 - she hates old movies!

That may be wise..... I don't think either one is a 'date' movie.

She really liked (maybe not loved) STM. I'm sure it will grow on her after many forced, countless viewings!

I'm POSITIVE every one of my ex-girlfriends will never want to watch a Superman, Star Wars or Indiana Jones movie ever again.

well, in my experience i dont see the point of watching STM with a chick so i gave up a long time ago. it is like showing something that you consider very especial and she is there and couldnt care less... perhaps i dont meet girls who are nerd enough... ;D

I still remember the first time my wife saw STM with me. She was one of those people who claimed that they'd "Seen Superman loads of times," but in fact had never seen STM. I never bothered showing it to her because I assumed she really had seen it. However, about 7 years ago, STM was on TV and she came in the room during the Smallville part. It was just after Jonathan died. Within seconds, it was obvious that she had never seen it because she didn't recognise anything that was going on. She was hooked instantly because of the drama, and asked me what the movie was. I told her I wasn't sure because I had missed the start, and that it was about a boy who discovers he is adopted and tries to find out where he came from. She watched the Leaving Home scene and got really sad. Still no clue that it was STM! Walking to the North Pole. Still no clue it was STM! Even when Jor-El appeared, and spoke about Krypton, she had no clue it was STM. She asked me if the boy was an alien and I said yes, I think he might be. At that point, she thought it might be something like ET. She only realised it was about Superman when we saw Christopher Reeve flying for the first time! Turns out she had NEVER seen STM. She'd seen bits and pieces of the various films when they were shown at Christmas, but never actually watched STM before! I hate when people do stuff like this. They claim they've "seen" Jaws or Star Wars or Rocky, but it turns out they've just caught glimpses of one of the crap sequels on TV, and then somehow delude themselves that they've seen the original lots of times.
