I'm not as into comic books as I was briefly in high school...and when I was, I enjoyed the artwork that existed in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. I've seen comics today and I get immediately turned out how simple and color-the-numbers kind of style they have taken. Independent comics and graphic novels have unique art style (I can't name them accordingly because it's just a casual observation), but the shit that Marvel produces, for example, is horrendous.
It's nearly similar as to how the look most cartoons have. If anyone has seen Heavy Metal, or even looked at the art from the 70s/80s, you'd know what I mean by designing detail to the worlds and people. You'd think designing comics on the computer would accentuate these crafts, but alas....there are only cheap designs.
Anyone else feel the same?

As an amateur artist and sometimes graphic designer for my newspaper, I've noticed something when it comes to illustration: Most people don't want a photo-realistic drawing. They want a simplified version of what's in their heads.
It's the thing that makes Alex Ross so unique. He found a way to use a photo-realistic approach that captured people's imaginations. A guy who caught a nice blend was Byrne with Man of Steel. In my mind, that is the perfect comic-book Superman.
Another example is political cartoons. Most of the humor is because of a funny line of dialog or a situation or a sign. However, people connect with the caricature. They wouldn't care if it was drawn to be an exact representation, but they love that Dubya is drawn like a chimp.

A few guys I like, who don't fit the "generic" bill you're talking about...look 'em up, and lemme know what you think!
Darwyn Cooke (see the "New Frontier" thread above. And then go buy everything he's ever done)
Mike Allred (who's indie-comic Madman, and his sci-fi history of rock n' roll, Red Rocket 7, are so much fun)
Gary Frank (current artist of Action Comics. Note the HEAVY Reeve influence!!!)
John Romita Jr (hey! A Marvel guy! Great style, and a credit to his Dad)
JH Williams III (love this dude. Love him)
Stuart Immonen (current Ultimate Spidey artist. Moody, fun, he does it all)
I'll think of more!

Great call on those artists, Val. Thanks! I checked each one out and yeah, they do stellar work. I liked Williams' Batman design a lot. Maybe I should take a trip to the comic shop one of these browse, it's been a looooooooong time. And Brad, Alex Ross is like the essential comic book artist. ;D Love his work too. Todd MacFarlane did good work when he was doing Amazing Spider-Man. Of course, he sculpts better than he draws. Which reminds me, I have to check out what are his latest sets.

Love the McFarlane figures, but the only one I ever bought was Snake Plissken. I'd love to get a Michael Myers one day.
