I have been out of touch with all the latest stuff for quite a few years. Last time I read Superman comics thoroughly and properly was back in the 90's with the Death of Superman story.
Can anyone recommend me some comics that I can read without having to read the others?
Also, quite interested in any comics related to the new Man of Steel film that I can read too.
Thanks

Hey evil, I just started to do this too, I just finished All Star Superman. They have the graphic novel out of it in two volumes of the whole 12 issue run. It's absolutely fabulous. One of the best that I've read. It's pretty highly recommended on this board.
That's all from me cause that's all I've read so far. I'm hoping to pick up sole more here soon.

Thanks Keith, I will check those out.
I've been checking some out online using an app for my iPhone and some of the artwork has come a long way since I was last reading them!

Start with All Star Superman. It's the best Superman story of the last 25 years, if not more.

you must find "for the man who has everything" by alan moore.
probably my all-time fave. it's been reprinted in various trades. look for "alan moore" and "superman" on amazon. if you don't like it- I will pay for it.
also, i really thought "EXILE" by various was a great arc from the 90's. shortly before "doomsday".
if i had 220 million laying around i'd finance EXILE/for the man who has everything as a feature, with routh as superman and emily blunt as his kryptonian wife. i'd fucking do it. and if WBDC wouldnt let me, i 'd do it anyway and GIVE it away on the internet. fan film. with 220 mil, i'd BE that nuckin futz.

i'd recommend Superman:Eradication! a trade paperback that collects the Day of the Krypton Man storyline. The Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite trade is a good read too.
Good luck finding them. I think these were released somewhere in the early 2000s or late 90s

Those are both great stories. But, I gotta be honest here. If you wanna read late 80s/90s Supes, you're better off just buying the single issues. You can literally get every single issue at cons and on the net for a buck or less. If you read 'em all, by the time you get to Death/Return it's such a HUGE payoff...

Additionally, I'm pretty sure EVERY Superman TPB excises a LOT of shit.
I second the single issues thing. DC can't do TPBs proper.

if you're finding single issues, i'd also recommend the 3-parter Dark Knight Over Metropolis. I dont think these have ever been collected into trade paperback

Yeah. So many great Superman stories from that period. Just get all of the single issues, because even the secondary stories from around there are great.
"Krisis of the Krimson Kryptonite" "Dark Knight Over Metropolis" "Exile" "Day of the Krypton Man" "Panic in the Sky" "Time and Time Again" obviously the whole Death/Return saga... All are just killer Superman stories!

Oh hecks yep.
Byrne's "man of steel" to "doomsday" was consistantly good-to-awesome. Subplots and side characters all mattered. Everything had impact.
Once mike carlin left direct editorial control it went to shit.

Even the single issue, non-huge story stuff, are REALLY goddamn good. I think from Man of Steel to the end of Return is perfect. It's what I consider Superman to be, barnone.

Agree with Matt. Secret Identity is a great, alternate take on Superman. One of my favorites.
I know I'm in the minority, but I liked the Godfall storyline from some years back. It was a pretty decent Kandor story, so something beyond the usual super feats. I liked it better than For Tomorrow, which I didn't dig at all.
Another of my favorite alternate takes is War of the Worlds. It's pretty straight forward: a late-1930s period piece adapted from the H.G. Welles story, but Superman is there.
I also enjoyed Loebs' run on Superman/Batman (giant chunk of Kryptonite about to destroy Earth), and the follow-up introducing the new Supergirl.

anyone remembers the 3-parter Supergirl Saga where in the end Supes broke his no-killing vow? I'd recommend that also

I'm going to read Action Comics 775 tonight. The "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" issue from 2001. I haven't read it. It's supposed to be pretty good.
It will be interesting to compare this to the DCAU film coming out in a couple of weeks.
