With MOS coming next year, not sure if this was talked about in any threads- but, did anyone have any speculation/ favorite choices as to who should be cast as Kara/Supergirl if there IS a spinoff/appearance in a sequel?
There's been lots of favorites mentioned prior to MOS casting for Supes. But don't recall if there were any favorites mentioned for a Supergirl film. (THAT's a reboot that needed to be done moreso than SR or Spiderman imo)...
Any current casting thoughts?

Id rather wait to see what direction MOS goes in before I even think about a potential Supergirl or Supergirl movie. If its a spinoff of MOS that would dictate what kind of girl they'd need to look for that would work as that incarnation of the character. When you compare say...Slaters Supergirl to the STAS Supergirl to the Smallville Supergirl the portrayals are noticeably different. They were all crafted for those specific universes.
Who knows if this new universe would even be accommodating to the concept of a Supergirl? It may be the same way Nolans films don't leave much room for Robin (though I still think Nolan Robin could work with the right alterations).

Never gonna be another Supergirl movie. Girl power superhero movies always flop.

There's got to be a first time. I think there's a market out there for a good female comic book movie.
And who to play Supergirl? An unknown of course.

Or comedies.
Or romance films.
Or horror movies.
Or inspirational stuff like "The Help."
You must have some shitty chicks around you. I don't know a ONE who considers one of those travesties her favorite.

I think there probably is one. Even though there is a LONG string of female comic book movie failures. It didn't help that the vast majority of them ranged from mediocre to terrible though, Jimbo. When Supergirl is arguably the best of the bunch I can see the problem. They just have to figure out how to make the films appealing as well as ...good. The Charlies Angles movies (ugh), Salt, and even Tomb Raider were successful on some level when there have been plenty of female led action films that tanked (like Haywire). The people making superhero films need to figure out the good things about those action films that made them hits.

Interesting, I would have thought there might have been casting suggestions here, but- interesting thoughts nontheless!
I agree..... it's amazing how MANY bad superheroine films there have been, though--- but with the success of "Hunger Games", it might open the door... a LITTLE.
If MOS's creators WANT to expand/include Supergirl (and the rest of the supporting bits of Superman's world) into their continuity, I'd love it.
The thing is: There just has to be a good writer/director who knows how to handle the material, as simple as that. The sad thing is, even in the COMICS, (where the budget is limitless) there's difficulty in getting a writer that can make that character greatly interesting/compelling.
Ironically, Smallville (in the last season) had Supergirl at her most interesting, as a supporting player in Superboy's life. Maybe Supergirl would be most interesting as a member of the Legion? (Though I highly doubt a Nolanverse anything would include time travel)
In any case- Did a search on 'top ten actresses under 30' for possibilities:
(Not mine, but these were listed) 1- Kristen Stewart 2- Michecke Williams 3- Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) 4- Carey Mulligan 5- Amanda Seyfried 6- Emily Blunt 7- Abbie Cornish 8- Ellen Page 9- Anne Hathaway 10- Saoirse Ronan
If it's an extremely young Supergirl, then I could see Saoirse Ronan- she came off great in that action fllm she did with Eric Bana...
Kristen Stewart I find a little irritating onscreen- but I was a little suprised to see Emily Blunt on this list, as I thought she was older than 30- but I think one could do worse than her if Supergirl is going to be older.
Anyhow--- just throwing it out there...

"my SUPER-EX-GIRLfriend" was a pretty funny movie.
uma thurman as a supergirl-ish heroine and luke wilson as a male ansewere to lois lane, with eddie izzard as "lex luthor-ish".
very good send-up of the superhero genre. what made it click was the "angle" wasn't just a list of things to make fun of (like the sh*t parody movies "scary movie" and so forth) but to focus on the psychosis of a person creating alternate identities. you'd have to be bat-shit crazy (no pun) to do what superhero's do with ridiculous costumes and third-person monologing and so on.
in "super-ex" luke wilson is at first delighted to be the boyfriend of the city's superhero, but then is TERRIFIED at how INSANE she is.
it's worth a watch.

I don't think a female-led superhero film couldn't work, I just don't think the concept has ever been approached particularly well. They mostly seem to fail because they focus too much on the character being a female, and end up being cringing because of it.
You might well argue there isn't a market for them, but that doesn't mean you can't make a good female superhero movie. And when a film like Supergirl is arguably one of the best attempts, then there hasn't really been a quality effort to test their appeal.
If they were to recast, I think they should go for someone who can embody the strength and gravity of a superhero, but still be feminine. Ideally, somewhere between Helen Slater and Sigourney Weaver, with a little humour thrown in.
In practice, I can imagine whoever the flavour of the month bimbo would get it . . . 10 years ago that might have been Lindsay Lohan . . . today that might be Megan Fox or the like.

How to write a female superhero character ... "I think of a (Super)man, then I take away reason and accountability."

When it comes to some of us HG might not be our cup of tea but it shows there is a huge market for a female led adventure film. I guess a point to take home is that the film has to appeal to women and men when a lot of female superhero/action films have been made just to appeal to men. Hunger Games probably appeals more to women but they can't be left out of the equation. Supergirl should appeal to men too but it should probably be geared a little more towards women. Besides being bad Catwoman was a chick in a skimpy outfit in a movie that didn't take itself seriously at all. Most women are going to want more than that that they can relate to. No self respecting woman would give a crap about Barb Wire and for men the only draw was Anderson's boobs...which we've all seen anyway. Tank Girl was something different but for whatever reason it failed. Stargazer would be the best person to figure out this whole problem.

Agreed.... if a female led superhero film was able to attract the "Twighlight" audience --- and keep superhero films grossing big buck$, then it can only help the 'superhero movie genre' cause overall.....

Judging at the colossal success of Mavel, I don't think that genre needs any help at the mo. A "She-Hulk" film may be interesting. Tricky to get right though I imagine - especially keeping her bra on after the change

I hear ya, Jimbo. I was amazed by early Ross stuff, when it seemed like he was choosier about looks and poses for his superhero posters--- But more often than not, now, the paintings he does of heroes seem more like pissed off or apathetic people in costumes- and the resemblance to the characters in the comics start to become questionable. He does some wonderful shots of Supes, but there's also a good number of shots where Ross makes Supes look like an angry old guy. Doesn't exactly inspire hope and goodness.

There was even a proposed movie starring Brigitte Nielsen in the early 90's but it never even started filming. Marvel movies have come a long way haven't they? ;D

If they took the script from the animated Wonder Woman movie from a few years ago and turned that into live action, not changing a single, goddamn thing, it'd be the greatest stand alone superhero movie ever made.

I STILL wonder why they don't just do that. The Wonder Woman animated movie would make the template for a great live action move. You wouldn't even have to change much.
GL First Flight was better than the Reynolds Green Lantern. They should have taken that script and made the live action movie.
Eventually they just need to take Crisis on Two Earths and film it as a JLA movie. Its better than anything WB could come up with on their own.
