Something I never understood was why Superman II was released in Australia in December of 1980 and in April 1981 for the United Kingdom, while the US release wasn't until the summer of 1981, which was a half a year after its initial release. Was it some sort of marketing deal, because if it was, they would have been better off releasing it in the winter, due to limited competition, just like what happened with the first film. I read that the Salkinds held the first movie "hostage" to Warners, so they couldn't pay off some debts. Was something like that applied to Superman II, but Warners didn't want to release it that quickly? I haven't heard of many occurrences like this, especially in withholding a US release, aside from Tintin was only released 2 months apart between Europe and the United States, but that was because the character was more popular there it is the United States.

Kamdan, if you go towards the bottom, there's a newspaper clip from Newsweek from 1980 on this thread that talks about that whole situation: fortressofsolitude.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=superman&action=display&thread=3836I remember it being a bit of a bummer that Supes II didn't open the same day as the first one, but if talking about a trailer in the theatres that made one go 'wow'--- can't do much better than SII....

Some years ago I read on imdb that the Australian release contained the scene with the young boy from East Houston being killed on the horse plus the Souflé scene. When the films got the boxset delux treatment in 2006 both scenes were there in widescreen.

Was it delayed? I don't remember the film missing the release date. I just always thought they were trying to maximizing profits by hitting the different regions during peak movie watching seasons. Today's rules with winter films, especially Christmas releases weren't practiced in 1980. Summer blockbuster baby!
