It makes me smile every time, and Hackman and Reeve really play this scene well. Supes isn't going to buy it, but Luther has to try.

Such different takes for "too late, Luthor". In one, Superman is pissed, and the other he's mildly amused. One of the few times I prefer the Donner cut.

If I'm honest I prefer all of Lester's additions to that scene once Luthor shows up.

Why can't the villains hear them whispering? I wondered this myself. In the Lester version it seems more as though Zod etc genuinely didn't hear. However, if you watch the scene in the Donner Cut over, you notice that Lois tries to warn Superman about something at the start, but is silenced by Ursa. I take that to mean that Luthor's betrayal was entirely premeditated by the villains to try and get Superman's probable trick out of him . . . hence, in that version they do hear him, they just pretend not to.
