Well, I just picked up BRAINIAC aka SUPERMAN: UNBOUND (Why did they feel that was a better title?) - mainly because the combo blu/dvd pack was $14 at target & love the original Johns/Frank comics. A few notes to share: * If this were the only animated adaptation ever of the dc universe, I'd think it pretty good--- but after seeing so many things done right (in general) with a number of the Bruce Timm produced DC animations, the bar has been raised quite a bit.... so, I'd have to say in light of those, this is only a so-so adaptation. * Character-design-wise, the two characters that I feel come the closest to the Gary Frank designs are (suprisingly) Supergirl/Kara and Brainiac. On the flip side, the designs for Superman/Clark and Lois are HORRIBLE.... as well as the voices feel too jovial/casual for those characters--- one gets past it, but Superman's design in particular reminds me more of the way Mort Drucker used to parody Superman in Mad magazine --- and certainly not emulating Chris Reeve like Frank's designs did in the comics. Also---If Supergirl has the classic blue color- Superman's costume is LITERALLY Teal! What the heck... when did his costume color officially change? * Spectacle-wise- there's hints of how this made for dvd movie could have been AMAZING- as a comparison, WB's recent "Dark Knight Returns Part II" FEELS like a live action movie- whereas I couldn't help but feel like a 'motion comics' approach would have had a far more powerful impact than what's onscreen. * On the plus side, there are a few changes from the original comics that do help out- For those unfamiliar with Supergirl (or the version they're using for this story), there's a great introduction scene between Supes and Supergirl to summarize the backstory and the nature of the relationship. But.... overall.... while Superman: Unbound isn't a complete disappointment- it's still a disappointment when compared to the comics.... and certainly to other animated projects with (presumably) similar budgets in the Timmverse.

Ah, thanks. Didn't know this came out. I'll just do my normal thing, download it and buy it if I like it. I've done it with most the DC animated movies and ended buying the majority of them.

Well.... to be honest, it makes me wonder if that wasn't a mistake, but if someone at WB/DC decided it was going to be Supes 'official' color now. Very odd.

I should have done that.... or rented it from Redbox before buying it.
It's not bad, mind you--- The design for Supergirl is great and there are some nice story touches, but the voice and look of Superman and Lois irritate (much like how Superman's look in 'Doomsday' bugged the heck out of me--- Why they feel so strongly that he needs a new look with every movie is beyond me)

I'd be curious what you think of it.... I don't recall if you read the original Johns/Frank comics, though, to have it to compare to- or if you're going in watching it 'fresh' so to speak.
"Batman: Year One" as an example wasn't a bad film, but comparing it to the (much more powerful) graphics in the comics made the animated adaptation weak only by comparison, I might be too harsh here for the same reason...

Eh. I didn't like it much. It was very frustrating to watch. Some things in were well animated and pretty bad ass when the majority really wasn't. I hated Lois, like full on, Clark and Supes were a bit of a bust, the voice and the look. Sometimes it looked like Disney Afternoon quality, sometimes it looked beautiful. Just annoying. I read the comics when they first came out so I'm not too well versed in it so I wasn't disappointed in that regard, at least. I dunno. I ain't buying it. I'm quite excited for Flashpoint, though.

It's good to know I'm not alone in hating their version of Lois & Clark/Supes.... thought I was imagining things. The dvd also came with some comic scans of the original books- (and only a few pages)--- but in looking at the power of those pages on the television right after viewing the movie- I REALLY was reminded how they missed the boat on making this an epic film. Oh well...

Just saw Superman: Unbound and really enjoyed it!
I'm not really into the cartoons or comics (just a big Chris Reeve fan), but thought this was great, quite dark, a good story, have to admit Supergirl and Lois were drawn to look very hot!
Lots of great action and fights, not sure how the story would translate to live action on a possible big screen sequel to MOS, as it is a bit too sci fi and fantasy, but as animation, it is great.

While I was watching I couldn't help but think "maybe it's a good thing we got Routh and Cavill as Superman instead of Bomer." Not that he's bad but I felt he was the weakest of the three in the role. It's funny how they were all trying out for the role of Superman at the same time in films that never got made but they all ended up playing the part in one form or another in different projects.

Finally got around to watching this last night with my roommate. Nothing special. With the bar continually being raised with these DC animated movies (Superman vs. The Elite and The Dark Knight Returns are probably the best of the lot), I expected more. The voice cast was bland, the animation was average, and the story was diluted quite a bit from the source material. Not using the Gary Frank artwork as a template didn't help things either. I have higher hopes for The Flashpoint Paradox. Interesting they're adapting 3 Geoff Johns stories in a row (Brainiac, Flashpoint, Justice League: Origins). He's my favorite comics writer though so I'm not complaining.

I think they're starting to pump them out too fast- and the quality is 'meh', but little more.
I agree that The Dark Knight Returns was their best so far (with Crisis on Multiple Earths and New Frontier close to it)--- I'd just as soon they take a little longer and put a little more work into them. The Brainiac one was incredibly disappointing. I'd almost prefer that they consider doing a motion comic vs. an animated on some of these books, where the animation can't come close to the artwork.

Flashpoint was really good. Much better than the comics too.

They also changed the story in a way that I thought was weaker..... WHY CHANGE/FIX WHAT"S NOT BROKEN? Would have rather that they did a motion comic--- recently saw the "Inhumans" motion comic with Jae Lee's artwork--- and it was pretty amazing. It's actually a better presentation than the comic for Jae Lee's artwork! (Usually it's the other way around). Getting less and less impressed with WB's animation adaptations. *sigh*

The Flashpoint Paradox was much better. What you said. Unbound was ok but nothing special. I actually enjoyed Superman Doomsday more. Flashpoint's art style took some getting used to but once it got going the movie pulled me in. It just a much more interesting story and it was great to hear so many familiar voices back in familiar roles. I'm looking forward to the sequel

Getting less and less impressed with WB's animation adaptations. *sigh* Sure "Unbound" was disappointing but I thought they knocked it out of the park with the last three ("vs. the Elite" and both part of "Dark Knight Returns.") And by all accounts "Flashpoint" is a winner too so I'd say that's a pretty good run. These have been hit or miss over the years but there've been more hits than misses, especially recently.

Flashpoint is one of the greatest superhero films I've ever seen, animated or no.
