"He knew. I heard him. I just didn't listen." That line would make sense to me (with "he" being Jor-El).
It sounds like Clark says, "THEY knew. I heard him. I just didn't listen." Obviously that doesn't make as much sense. Who would "they" be? They Kryptonian Elders?
Does anybody else think it sounds like "they?"

Theatrical cut they dubbed over it when they changed to using Susannah York instead of Marlon Brando. Richard Donner's cut rectified this.

Yeah I think in the theatrical cut its supposed to sound like he said "I heard em, I just didn't listen." "Em" meaning "them."
Might be one of those cases where the way he says the words sounded so similar that its hard to tell and maybe it didn't need dubbing over.

"They" could more so indicate his Jor-El and Lara. Even though he only spoke to Laura, he did call out father when he returned to the Fortress.
Did "'em" just fit better into his mouth movement? All of the dubbing was supervised when Lester was directing, which was why we had all of those redubs in the Donner Cut.

I think so but thats just me. "em" and "him" sound similar enough the way he said the words and the lip movement is similar enough too.
Stuff like this happens in dubs; dubbing in different words that fit the mouth movement. Its really distracting when you see a movie with new voiceover work dubbed in and the words don't match the lips at all.

I always thought they added the random Kryptonian record keeper to the Fortress to explain the "they." Otherwise why not just have York do all the hologram stuff?
They probably were going to dub it with "she knew...I heard her," but the lips wouldn't match, so they added a random dude to justify the "they".

Don't forget that he was calling for both his mother and father when he got back to the Fortress. I think they added the male Elder so that they didn't have to use the Hackman double to dub the line, "He's not here. It's a voice from the past."

To be clear, in the Lester theatrical cut, do we think Clark says: a) "THEY knew. I heard 'EM." b) "THEY knew. I hear HIM." c) "HE knew. I heard HIM." Always thought it was option A. The subtitles read "They knew, I heard them". I wouldn't trust the subs 100% though. In Superman the Movie, when Supes saves Jimmy at the dam, the subs read "hang on Jim", but he definitely says "hang on kid". |

I wouldn't trust the subs 100% though. In Superman the Movie, when Supes saves Jimmy at the dam, the subs read "hang on Jim", but he definitely says "hang on kid". On the VHS for The Empire Strikes Back, there's a scene on the Falcon where C-3PO runs up to Solo and says "Captain Solo! Captain Solo!" The person doing the captioning interpreted that as "Captain, turn it! Captain, turn it!" ;D |

My answer to your question was about what he says in the theatrical version of the film. |
