Best known for her role as Clark Kent's (Christopher Reeve) mother in 1978's Superman, actress Phyllis Thaxter sadly passed away on Tuesday at her home in Florida at the age of 90. The Hollywood Reporter confirms the sad news that Phyllis Thaxter died on Tuesday at her in Florida after what they describe as, "a long bout with Alzheimer's." The actress will be best known to comic book fans for playing Ma Kent in Richard Donner's Superman over 30 years ago. "She was one of the most beautiful and patrician icons of the golden age of movies, TV and theater," veteran movie critic Rex Reed told the site. Thaxter was also known for roles in the likes of Bewitched, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo and Act of Violence. RIP, Ma.

Thanks for sharing this MAVERICK ... She was so good in that role ... she made it so believable and so enduring.
I adore her skills as an actress.

Sad to hear about her long bout with Alzheimer's. At least she's at peace now. Great performance; RIP.

Damn I was thinking about her yesterday. Strange. RIP. Ma Kents never been as meaty a role as Pa Kent but Thaxter was pretty good in as Martha.

I seriously assumed she had to have died years ago. Didnt realize she was alive all this time.
Ah well. RIP and have others have said, she and Glenn Ford performed admirably as Ma and Pa, no-one else will ever come close in my view, to providing that warmth.
