I remember where I was when I first heard of his accident.
I remember where I was when I first heard of his death.
I don't remember where I was when I first saw him as Superman. He's always been present in my mind. Always has been and always will be Superman to me.

He's always been present in my mind. Always has been and always will be Superman to me. first heard of his accident, my dad told me in the living room, I was about 9 or 10 years old. First heard of his death? I called home from my work phone to ask if a package had arrived for me and my mum asked me if i'd heard about Chris Reeve, the shocking this is the first thing my mind went to was 'did he walk?', but she said he had died As for first memory of his as superman, no clue, been watching them for as far back as my memory of my life goes.

Wow, 8 years. It's weird that it feels like it wasn't long ago at all, but then I think of all the changes that have happened in my life since then, and it feels a lifetime away.
For someone I never really knew, he's had a huge influence on my life, and will never be forgotten.

When STM came out, it was a giant event- and the intro to Reeve's talents to the world was part of that spectacular event. (It's hard to envision WHO Donner would have chosen/been able to get, if Reeve hadn't gotten the role)
The thing about Reeve is that he'd always been considered a good guy by fans- and directors have given him credit as a consummate professional. I appreciated that greatly- if the guy who played such an iconic role was someone who tore up hotel rooms or beat up women/etc.- then it'd be much harder to embrace the films and the actor's presence in them, especially over time.
And- for the actors that said negative things about him- the negativity doesn't sound THAT horrible, either, to be honest. Walking around in tights in a movie that even the actors on set thought might be a giant bomb had to have the potential to make him feel pretty insecure, if he needed more support to believe he was that character, I could see anyone at that age feeling the heat, maybe even more than Donner (who had "Omen"'s success behind him at that point and was a veteran tv director as well)- but if the movie tanked, Reeve could probably have seen his movie career get destroyed overnight, and he probably was aware of that.
Marc Mclure mentioned that when he was on the set with the other actors, he wanted to stay in character- off the set, that he was easygoing as anyone.
Pity that the movies weren't guided by Donner.... I can easily have imagined the series of Superman movies getting better and better under him, and been more popular along the lines of Star Wars, rather than a short series that has 1 1/2 excellent ones and two and a half terrible ones.
((*While STM and part of SII is a classic, blah blah blah.... it's not beloved as Star Wars or Star Trek- I think because the movies got shortchanged so quickly.))
Reeve's star might have shined even brighter under those, but I'm glad for him that he was able to live to see at least that STM and Somewhere in Time became classics he could be proud of.
As far as the life after the accident, I know it's been said a lot elsewhere- but it's still worth mentioning - personally, when I heard about it- I was shocked and the thought was: 'wow, paralyzed from the neck down? I'm not sure I'd WANT to be alive after that.'
It's hard to imagine getting out of bed the next day in that condition, let alone rising up and trying to effect positive change in the world over the situation. But Reeve did it, and was taken from us too soon, although there's a bittersweet comment by his mom that said that he was 'at last he was free from the chair'.
Like the tag the media used over and over again, that Reeve was Superman in the movies, but showed how much a Superman he was in real life as an inspiration after the accident. The idea and image of Reeve as Superman as a symbol of hope in the movies becomes even more powerful when thinking about the real story, too.
More than a movie hero... not to sound superficial quoting Batman Begins, but... Legend.

This was a rough day for me. I was blessed enough to live with a board member at the time and we got through it. Mine was the figure standing next to the top point of the star.

Busted? Are you a couple of spastics? Actually don't answer that Just confess. You're the Reeve Only Person that we've all been looking for. I've got to hand it to you. Your disguise is nearly perfect. You had me fooled. And I am nobody's fool.

Has it really been nine years? Huh. I guess that'd make it a few months after moving across country. God, it's more depressing to realize I've been stuck in this shit hole for nine years. Celebrity deaths don't really bother me. It's not like I knew the guy or anything. Hard to say as I don't think any of my absolute favorites are dead anyway. We'll see. How old is Carpenter or Russell? Maybe if Kelly kicks the bucket young. I think that might devastate me. Then I know I really don't have a shot.
