Wasn't Mankiewicz the guy who came up with the idea of turning the world back in STM and then as if that wasn't retarded enough once, he decided it needed to be done again in the Donner cut? As someone who is fine with the time reversal of STM, I could not disapprove more of it being reused in the RDC. And as I understand it, Mank was the one that pushed it through because of his belief that "Clark Kent and Lois Lane should never kiss," therefore eliminating the Lester kiss as an option. There's no question he brought a lot of good to Superman, but that was a stupid call. You are right. He was the one who forced that retardness into the Donner Cut. Right there, I lost any interest in hearing what he had to say in any interviews.

No, it was in Puzo's original script- but it was supposed to be at the end of SII, not STM.... and I doubt it was ever meant to be used twice.
I have this rotten feeling that Mank and Donner at the time of the editing of the RDC just felt too removed from the film (and/or maybe from seeing how little footage there might have been) to invest themselves too much in the final outcome.... other than insisting on making things faster and removing as much Lester as possible.
If the movie was called 'the Richard Donner Rough cut' I think it might have been a little easier to digest. Selling it as a 'fixed and completed' work certainly led to a lot of disappointment.

Whilst I understand in an earlier SII script Lois was supposed to die and as a result Superman turns back time for her, in Mankiewicz's shooting script for SII Lois doesn't die and the events play out pretty much like the Donner cut.
With that in mind I'd like to know how Donner and Mankiewicz envisaged the turning back time sequence working in SII, especially since as it stands the diner rematch makes little sense.

Would LOVE to get my hands on that copy of the script- yeah, I'd read the same thing about Lois dying at the Fortress of Solitude- but is it Ursa snapping her neck. or Lois falling in the Fortress (I think that's something I read mentioned somewhere, too) during the battle?
In any case, would be interesting to have had that ending as an alternative.....
Although, since Donner/Mank we know already chose to change it then---- the only thing that I can think of is Spengler's comment on SII commentary that Supes sees the world is trashed beyond repair because of the villains, and that's why he turns back time.
No matter what, turning back time is a terrible idea- but would have been interesting to have seen that alternate version, if Donner had shot that as well.
Oh well...

Clark took his glasses off for that kiss, so it was Superman, scans the costume.
