So, there's a fun discussion on another board I belong to (for journalists) about favorite fictional presidents from the movies. E.G. Marshall from "Superman II" was on the list, and I made the argument that he was a terrible president during the Zod crisis.
First of all, why is he still in the White House? He should have run off to a nuclear bunker somewhere buried in the Rockies or whatever. Presumably, that bunker would be lead-lined to ward off radiation from fallout. So, Zod and company would have a harder time looking for him. Of course, Zod, Non, and Ursa would just tear through multiple bunkers physically in about three minutes to find him. But the president could have at least slowed them down.
Anyway, the president stays behind, then hides behind one of his lackeys like a coward. He was willing to sacrifice one of his men to hide, then he kneels so quickly. Saving lives, my ass, he's saving himself. Then he cries like a bitch for Superman to save the day. You're supposed to be the leader of the free world. Lead.
Also, once Superman showed up and told his story, shouldn't his top military people started working on a solution to stopping a Kryptonian. Sure, they didn't know about the three criminals, but who knows if Superman would ever go rogue? And he did in '83. The military, at the command of the president, should have been better prepared.
If it was the president's first term in '81, no way the people should have re-elected him in '84.
Discuss.

Here's a cool casting irony-
E.g. maRshal plays the president - gene hackman plays luthor (though thay don't have any scenes together).
Many years later gene hackman would play the president and e.g. marshal is cast as his friend who kills him for shtooping hiw trophy wife. ("Absolue power")
Eg marshalls passive pres was a mirror of jimma cah-tah. Hackmans philandering murderor pres was a mirror of bubba slick willy.
heck, reagan would packed a nuke with kryptonite and fried the moon the moment he saw what zod did to the astronauts.

I forgot about the TV address scene in S4. Been a while since I've seen that one. Your recall is better than mine.

The Restored International Cut made a peanuts reference in the Air Force One scene. Was Marshall really playing Jimmy Carter?

I know Carter had to be the reference for that bit, given the time frame, but Marshall certainly didn't sound like Carter.
