What do you all think this means? We've all heard it hundreds of times. It sounds great. It's poetic, but think about it. What does it mean? I understand how the son becomes the father. The son grows up to be the man his father once was. The other part confuses me. How does the father become the son?

That's a good question. I guess it could be looked at a lot of ways. Maybe one way is the father gets older and the son has to be the one to take on the responsibility. It happens with all our parents when they don't have the strength to carry the lions share of responsibilities. The children become the leaders and the old generation kind of steps aside. They are ones that need to be protected.
In Superman's case he's the one in charge of his fathers legacy. In the end that's all that's left of Jor El and Superman has to protect that. Whereas before children are seen as their parents legacy for the future. They still are but then they become the one in charge. The one with the authority and responsibility.

Tip your cap and round the bases, sir.

i thought it was prophetic as Jor's ghost has to infuse energy into human clark in order to restore his powers. which means that Jor is utterly gone- but his "energy/ghost/life-force" lives in his son.

That's a great answer for Donner's Superman I and II -- specifically Donner's SII, but I wonder why Supes says it at the end of Superman Returns. I know, it's another cool reference to he old movies, but does it really make sense there?

I think it hints that as parents get older and become senile, that the children have to take care of them, until they die.... thus, the cared for, become the caregivers--- until they become senile again. That's one reason that I found the ending of Superman Returns so amazing--- is that (to me at the time) I felt it hinted that they eventually would do a final sequel that would be the death of Superman, with Jason being the one that would one day be earth's new savior to take his place. (Though, if the rumors were true, it never was the half-baked plan anyways. *sigh*)

On another note, I'm pretty glad that when Donner & Brando were 'retired', that they didn't rewrite it with Susannah York saying, "The son becomes the mother, and the mother...the son."
