Interesting.
I, for one, am glad the movie didn't happen. Nic Cage, much as I enjoy him, isn't Superman.
I remember Kevin said something once that always stuck with me. We were discussing race and casting Superman with a black actor or Asian actor, or something like that. The justification was that Superman is an alien and who's to say what he'd look like. But Superman has always been white. And Kevin said something, and I'm paraphrasing here because I don't remember the exact quote: "How about if we make Superman a round blob with no arms and no legs? After all he's an alien. Who's to say he won't look like that? Denzel Washington is a good actor, but so is Al Pacino. How about an Al Pacino Superman?"
Something like that. And it's hard to describe why but he makes his point.
Superman looks like Superman. What the fuck is Nick Cage doing in a Superman costume?

Good read. I like Cage and his enthusiasm for this stuff. We still dodged a bullet though. Still...I have a twisted curiosity over what might have been.

Superman isn't like any other hero. His specific looks matter a lot. You see his face all the time. He's not normal Joe man he's SUPERMAN. As Superman he should look special. And even when you exclude Superman comics are such a visual medium. It's static so you can stare at a panel for hours. We all have a collective idea of what these characters look like. When an actor nails that look it can be so much better. It's why even though Cathy Lee Crosby was cute in her a prime a BLOND Wonder Woman of average height was a little hard to get past.

Still...I have a twisted curiosity over what might have been. Yeah, I think I know what you mean. Kinda like: I'm glad it wasn't released, but I kinda wish it had been made, shelved and released on bootleg like the Fantastic Four movie or something.

Yeah sort of. Superman Lives probably would have been awful but its just so...different that I'd risk the awfulness to satisfy my curiosity.
The funny thing about the 1994 Fantastic 4 movie is as bad as it is I still think it has more heart than the 2005 movie. Go figure.

I kind of thought one appeal of Superman is that he's quite non-descript, facially. Dark hair, strong jawline, blue eyes, but that's about it. Otherwise, if his look was too unique, he could never blend in as everyman Clark Kent. It's why folks drive me nuts when they try to disect images of Superman and try to find Reeve in there: it's because it's a rather plain look. It's not like Superman has an eye patch like Snake or a scar like Tony Montana or is bald like Xavier. Superman stands out because of his wardrobe and powers. Technically, Nic Cage fits the basic description of Superman. Otherwise, it was interesting to read Cage admit that the costume screen test pics are real. Makes me wonder what we would have gotten from Burton. Can't say whether I would have liked it, but it would undoubtably be unique. Possibly one day a cult classic. heck, it's practically a cult film that never got filmed at all!

I am glad Superman Lives never got made.
It would have been an angsty movie about a lonely alien who doesnt fit in, and it would have been dark and looked like a Batman movie.
For all its faults, MoS wasn't that.
Oh wait.....

If Burton got to make Superman Lives today, Johnny Depp would have a major role. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

So wait... Is he saying that the first " action figure" picture was real? I just can't believe that... It looks so fake. I think soneone even found the action figure the picture was made from. Perhaps he is referring that the more recent leak had two pictures? If that picture is real.. Than fuck, they defiantly did a better job with the more traditional suit design.

Long face and droopy eyes doesn't really fit with the basic description of Supermans square jaw and steely sometimes squinting gaze. You're right there's a kind of blandness to Supermans looks but its not an average Joe look. Non descript is better. His face is smooth and his features sharp. His face isn't a regular guys but it doesn't have a lot of character in it either the way a...Jimmy Durantes does. Like you said his features are nondescript. Thats why Reeve said he liked the character aging gave his face. Cages face has a LOT of character. Yo could easily describe him to someone and they could tell you who it is.

Like you said it looks plastic.

He said there's truth in both as if he was talking about separate shoots.

Like you said it looks plastic. You know what detail makes me believe it's an action figure Photoshopped to his head? Ever notice how action figures split the deltoid muscle as a point of articulation? It's kind of like the seam pattern of the Reeve costume, but it appears to have more seperation, like two pieces of plastic joined together. Like a toy. Just my thought.
