I've still only seen Avengers once. It was really enjoyable, but evidently I'm not in a hurry to watch it again. What Ollie said is correct though, but the appeal of it is the idea of multiple heroes in the one film ofcourse. I still think its funny WB are in a hurry to do JL when that really will be chewed meat by the time they get around to it, especially when you consider the Avengers 2 will be out by that point. I'd struggle to do a top 10. There's a small number I think have been done really well. STM Batman Returns Batman Begins Spiderman 2 Those are my favs. Might be controversial but I reckon the whole train battle with Doc Ock in Spiderman 2 is the best action sequence in any comic book film. I don't know if its THE best as of today but its definitely one of the best. It certainly was up to the point of Spider-Man 2's release. Top tens are hard for me because as you said few are REALLY special but those few are growing in number. For me some of these films are so close in quality that its hard to choose. JL will probably make huge money but by the time it comes out the novelty will indeed be gone. It's obvious WBs doing it now because Marvel and Disney did it first and made a shitload of money. Being the first is always special when its a huge success. Wow, Dick Tracy love! Nice. There aren't many of us that like that one. I do, though. I'm gonna buy it on bluray. Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards Hey I like Dick Tracy. It's not perfect but so much about it was really ambitious. When it comes to literal translation of comic book style it was the Sin City of its day. Nobody had ever gone that far with trying for replicate the artwork Plus there are some really entertaining performances. Pacino doesn't get enough credit for this flick. Big Boy is hilarious.

Seeing him talk at cons on videos and stuff, the dude comes off as extraordinarily humble but just like us, extremely stubborn in his nerddom. He's one of us, for sure, he just happens to be a top filmmaker and TV producer. I wish I could hang out with him and just watch Star Wars or something. That'd be awesome.

I was suspicious about the 'cult of Whedon' when I viewed 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'--- which I only saw because of the amount of attention it was generating back when it was new by critics and fans - then, was pleasantly surpised at how good and unique it was.
However, hearing Joss Whedon refer to Avengers Annual #7 at Comicon as the best comic ever, (which many of the audience didn't seem to know - or, if they did, they weren't very vocal about it)--- pretty much won me over that Joss Whedon REALLY was a hardcore comic book fan.
(*Similarly, I was stoked to hear Tarantino refer to 'Master of Kung Fu' as the best comic book series ever. Pity he hasn't campaigned to be the director of that film adaptation, but that's another conversation.)

With some Hollywood folks you get the sense that their Geekdom is a put on to fool the hardcore fans. With Whedon and Tarantino I have no doubt its genuine. They're real deal geeks. I read about a Tarantino story where he made a Psycho 3 reference out of the blue to Jeff Fahey. That's real film geek stuff right there. Whedon really seems like a nice guy too. If anyone deserves this great success its him. His fanbase used to be diehard but loyal, CAM. Thats why they seem so devoted. I watched Buffy and Angel a little bit but I didn't really "get it" until I watched Firefly. It's one of the best sci fi shows ever to not get a real chance to grow. As far as Im concerns before the new BSG came along Firefly carried the torch that shows like Star Trek and Babylon 5 had carried before.

I remember YEARS ago seeing Tarantino on the dealers' room floor from a distance, just trying to be an anonymous fan, checking out stuff to buy on the dealers' floor at San Diego Comicon--- but then, within a couple of minutes, a horde of fans starting to gather up around him, at which time, he had to leave the dealers' room. I saw him trying to be polite as possible to folks, but I didn't blame him for wanting to leave once they began to storm him.
As far as Buffy/Angel:
Buffy has some 'standalones', but it really works better seeing a whole season, as a miniseries.
Angel didn't really get it's 'sea legs' until halfway through season 2-- at that point, it's more about the final ensemble than the lead character, and there's a real direction once his son is born. From thereon out, it's like one long continuous novel... but with (just like the other Whedon shows) hilarious dialogue and comic moments now and then alongside the tragic nature of that show.

I love that quite a few have Batman Returns in their top 10 as it was always a favourite movie of my childhood. Unfortunately over the years I've lost interest in it as I now see it as simply a Tim Burton vehicle to pedal his insane imagery with little to no story or character development.
Batman 89 was Tim Burton on a leash and the movie was all the better for it. Batman Returns was a result of a studio saying 'do whatever you want'. Recently someone made a similar comparison to Superman Returns in the sense that Bryan Singer was given an amazing amount of creative freedom for his first major outing for the studio.
With Batman 89 I just love Nicholson's witty and insane dialogue. It reminds me so much of Hackman's well written dialogue for Lex.

I've gone back and forth on which one is better. Right now for me Batmans production design puts it over Batman Returns. It's amazing. Returns has a more complex story but the first film is a visual force. It has just the right atmosphere. With Returns sometimes I think everything looks a little too clean and "machined" instead of rough around the edges. Clearly that was Burton's intent when making his fantasy world for BR--and I like it--but the style of the first film has a kind of gothic grit and grime I prefer.

They do feel like two different films, for sure.
The first feels like it was a movie taking place in the 1940's--- and maybe it was appropriate.
The second feels squarely like it was timeless, like Burton's Edward Scissorhands- more like it took place in a dark fantasy world in Burton's head. The story also felt more like one of Burton's twisted fairy tales- The Catwoman story was great (far better than TDKR, which was greatly lacking), despite some gaps here and there that didn't make a lot of sense.

These get harder to do every year, which is a good thing. It's been a while but let's see:
STM B89 Batman Begins The Dark Knight The Avengers Man of Steel Captain America Spider-Man 2 Iron Man X2 It's been a while since I've seen Iron Man or X2 though, so those last two spots may require reassessment in the near future.

It's a GREAT thing. I just don't want any more unnecessary reboots. There are plenty of great comic characters that haven't ever been given the live-action treatment to choose from.

I had the same exact reaction with Daredevil AND Green Hornet.
I was SOOO convinced they were going to be among the worst movies EVER, but was surprised when I had a good time.

Agreed. I really enjoyed Green Hornet, even bought it on Blu-ray (it was on sale for like $7).

Hm.... maybe expectations really do make a difference- to a degree. With Green Hornet, I was looking forward to it as the director's indie film (whose name slips my mind) was so visually inventive, I really thought there would be more with Hornet. With Daredevil, I think I was too familiar with the great Miller stories that Daredevil the movie cannibalized- and didn't come close to the impact of the original stories. So, I was disappointed with GH, and hated DD the film....
