I am not crazy about the dragonfly in MoS and i notice that several people here hate it.
Why is it hated so much?
I think the reason it annoys me is because it is trying to copy Avatar. It is a symptom of the derivative nature of MoS.

I don't mind the dragon fly. But I found the way it was used was terribly cliche - "oh no, he's falling to his death - no wait, he's just been saved!"
Btw, if Zod was so keen on getting the codex back, why did try to blow it up twice in 10 minutes?

What I find annoying is how both of Superman's father died lame deaths. Jor El took a knife and dropped dead.
I'm reminded of Han. Who knows what delicate wonders...

It doesn't remind me of avatar in the slightest. I could almost see "attack of the clones" what with jor having a beard and riding a weird alien animal, but otherwise NO.
I think its a good affectation, in a society with all that tech, it makes sense that a guy like jor would have a pet/beast of burden. It fits his persona in the context of his society where he's sort of a throwback to more (relatively) "rustic" lifestyles.
A better title for the thread might be :
"I don't like the dragonfly, so here's yet another needless thread"

Did not remind me of Avatar at all, I had no problem with the dragonfly. Obviously according the this thread ATP, the dragonfly isn't all that hated as you say it is. Awaits the next thread...

I don't hate it but I do want to put this music over it Now THAT was funny. And btw I love that film, brilliant childhood memories for me. But I bet 80% of this board will claim those effects are better purely because they aren't digital The dragonfly didn't remind me of Avatar either. You could pick apart most films and find a similarity to another film which has been an influence though.

I read that paleantologists have fossils of dragonflys with a wingspan of four feet.
That's a big damn dragonfly.
Can't say id like to bring that extinct species back.

It would make you shit your pants to know what kind of life used to be on this planet.
Fuck, the old world still exists deep in the oceans. We're finding MASSIVE creatures from the sea long thought extinct.

It doesn't remind me of avatar in the slightest. Both my son and I looked at each other during that scene and said, "Avatar". It didn't necessarily bother me but we both recognized it immediately.

The dragonfly (or whatever it was) didn't bother me at all- If anything, I was savoring whatever there was of Krypton--- could have had more. (the pointless repeating of 'I will find him!' not counting)
I agree that with so many scifi films, there's bound to be similarities to one film or another- and feel derivative (thinking of the underrated John Carter) but the more time I think spent on a particular environment, the more it becomes its own thing.
With Superman/Batman coming next, it's a pity that the likelihood of seeing more Krypton in flashbacks in a sequel is probably zero.

That's why we get along swimmingly. Watching "Fletch" used to be my litmus test for dating a woman. If she didn't like it or get it, well....
