In your opinion, is it just a giant mirror that basically squishes villains into it and keeps them there floating in space forever? And was that the invention of the filmmakers? Or is it more than just a mirror and an actual alternate world designed for villains where they live but can never escape from (like in Supergirl). Or is it something else entirely?

To me, it is exactly how it seems in STM.

To me, it is exactly how it seems in STM.
A mirror prison and nothing more.

I always took it as what WE see from this side--- so, I did like (but didn't love) how "Supergirl" showed it was sort of a transport device.

The giant black adult toy version was disappointing. It was weird/different- so I give it points for that--- but I was more excited to see something a little more inventive conceptually.

That's what they did in "Smallville." The iconic 2-D square was just a window into the alternate dimension of the Phantom Zone, which was visited in a few episodes.

Btw, I voted for the STM/SII version.
