It was indeed!
Its my favorite scene in the whole series. Maybe a tie with helicopter rescue. Its interesting to me that S2 was about the same tone as STM, but lester peppered the action scenes with too much slapstick (not camp dammit!) (Winks at merm). In S3 the whole movie is derailed with slapstick, but lester-wisely imo- kept this scene very serious.

Reeve looks incredible, and the flying effects (even though they are short) are impressive. That part where he jumps/flies out of the acid bath is so perfectly done.

Mr Snyder, try to emulate this please.

Its reminding me of star trek 5. The most heavily maligned ep in the series. The bottom of the bottom.
But when sybok has them visualize their pain, their biggest regrets/disappointments and kirk (we don't need the visuals- we saw trek 2 and 3) its just beautiful. I always say its one of the best character driven scenes in the whole of the series. The rest of trek5 is silly-to-stupid.

the junkyard scene is meta-language to me, like superman having to endure all that nonsense lester created just to the point where he cant stand any more and then loses his mind. by the way, if clark would snap superman's neck, would it be considered off-character?

There ARE some great moments with that sequence... but I wish they went even further with it. In the whole of the series- there's never really a clear designation on what the difference is between Clark and Supes.
I've read that Donner/Reeve looked at the Clark persona purely as an 'act' when he gets to Metropolis- and nothing more....
But with Lester's rewrite of SII- it's more muddled, as if Supes wanted Lois to like Clark as he was.... as if he was a 'real' persona.
With SIII- it could have been clarified more, but with Lana written as a pretty two-dimensional character (pity, as Annette O'Toole is/was a great actress)--- it's even more vague as to which character is 'real'.
Writing-wise, it would have been nice if they had attempted to give the character more depth in general.
If anything, the Lois & Clark tv show at least is clearer in its presentation of the two: in there, Supes/Clark is the same character, minus powers, but it's just Lois being a dunce for falling for one, but not the other. With Lester's interpretation..... it's very muddled- even more so in the FOS in SII- where Superman talks to Lois about the split of the character in REALLY vague terms.

I had to watch it again. Fuck, what an incredible scene: I had to watch it again too. One of the highlights of the series for sure. Didn't someone on the board do an in-depth analysis of this scene, pointing out and analyzing all the subtext and subtleties? I think it was Johnny Boy. That's an edited clip, btw. I leaves out Clark throwing the tires on Evil Superman and Evil Superman dropping the giant magnet on Clark.

Why was this scene so much better than the Zod vs Superman fight in MoS?

crap + crap = crap this has to be one of the worst moments in any superman movie....lets have a great grand fight in a.............JUNKYARD? I seen this in the theaters in 1983....and that was my thought then and still is my thought now..... Salkin's got the movie that they wanted and Lester killed the franchise If you want to see a good battle of good vs evil watch the old Star trek episode where Kirk gets "doubled" up from the transporter.........they did it better on a heck of a smaller budget.

Why was this scene so much better than the Zod vs Superman fight in MoS? It's a great sequence. It's amazing that the scene was so amazing considering it featured...well...you know.
