Yeah, I really hope its a grower.
I really wanted to like SR. Enjoy the opening creds, but when that Gothic mansion opens, it all goes to heck. Same thing when I used to try to watch AotC. opening creds were fine and that bomb going off - but as soon as Hayden appears in that lift, you remember how bad it really is. Massive shame. both films suffer enormously from grade Z scripts, a lead actor/actress woefully miscast and references to glory days long since forgotten gone

Last time I tried to watch SR, I didn't make it. Turned it off about halfway in, and promptly went to my library to grab some smaller movies I'd wanted to see for a while. It just triggered this strong feeling of needing to watch something vastly different. So already I'm reconsidering trying that again

I caught the ending of SR last night, when Supes is giving his little speech to the kid and then says bye to Lois and flies off.
That scene of him flying through the clouds and into space is probably the greatest flying scene I've ever seen Superman involved in.
It is so, so beautiful.
Incidentally, I haven't answered because I honestly don't know.

Yeah, there's about 15 mins of footage in that movie that hits the bullseye. The long shot of him in front of the Daily Planet globe ascending with Lois is marvellous.

If the CGI had been of a better quality, Kev, that scene would have been perfect. For me, though, that CGI closeup before he barrelrolls is horrendous and takes me out of the scene every time.

I think nothing in MOS matches the plane rescue as a setpiece or the listening sequence for some awe inspiring visuals. However, I prefer much more about the casting and plot of MOS.
The third act certainly lets them both down. Same with STM actually.

But...IS that CGI?
For sure?
I was absolutely sure about some of it when I first saw the movie, whenever I thought it was CGI, it was, but then the behind the scenes stuff kinda proved me otherwise. Then, watching it on my bigger TV, I saw a lot of scenes where I thought were CGI that no longer looked it, I could tell it was really actually Routh. Same with MOS. In SR, there's just some weird shading that happens in the flying scenes that makes him look fake sometimes when he's actually really there. Other times, he really isn't there, which makes it all the more confusing.
However, that one single shot is the only I just cannot tell if it's real or not. There's a fakeness to it but also a realness that CGI just wasn't quite at in 2006.
And gosh, you're right, actually. I mean, I love STM, but the last thirty minutes kinda...lose me sometimes, if the movie loses me at all. It's basically from when that Indian says "Custer" that it kinda weakens a bit.

The music for that scene is gorgeous, perfect sendoff to the film... even after you've heard Brainstorm. Never done any fanedits, but SR seems like a fun challenge. There's a lot of good in it and a heck of a lot of nothing.

It has to be CGI, he just looks so rubbery. Same as when he throws the shuttle into space.

The third act certainly lets them both down. Same with STM actually. Superman leaving the scout ship, cape blowing in the wind. Only seen it a few times in the cinema and it's already one of my favourite moments with Superman on the big screen, very iconic looking. SR does have some great bits, the plane rescue is excellent, the score is very good. I always liked the take off out of the elevator shaft. I think Melv is right about the final shot though, it's a fully digital Routh, at least I always thought it was. I also loved that shot where he flies up above the clouds to recharge in the sunlight.

I might not have the same level of equipment as Hollywood, but I know that changing the saturation and/or coloring and/or contrast of a movie on a home computer does weird things to movie footage.... the palette (or color filter) was definitely bizzare in SR- I never was a fan of it. I heard it was added at the last minute, and I wonder if it screwed up the images (both the 'live' footage and CGI) by doing so in spots?

If the filter was a last-minute decision, then it would be nice (although highly unlikely) if there was a release pre-filter.
I'll have to go back and dig it up, but I remember buying the American Cinematographer magazine for SR, which mentioned that it was the first time for Singer to utilize a new videocamera for SR's shoot.... maybe that possibly added to the 'rubbery' look of some of the shots. Will have to re-read that article and share again here if it reveals anything.... Would be really odd if SR ended up getting slammed for CGI use that never happened, after all this time...

I wouldn't be surprised if they did a 3D rerelease on bluray for SR. It would be something to see it with a better color palette, too. The night time flying scenes would be gorgeous.

Sent from my SPH-L720 using proboards If they do, an extended cut (there's still a few interesting deleted scenes we know haven't been released yet: I'm thinking of the one with Clark changing to Superman in the DP, but still having the glasses on & young Clark pulling the tarp off of his spacecraft in the Smallville Barn) would be nice... but probably will never happen. Singer & Ottman supposedly were going to recut/edit Xmen around the time they were shooting X2- but dropped it as a priority (I assume they might have planned to shoot any missing bits at the same time as they had the cast there). The only reasons I can think of for the odd color palette might be: (1) to accomodate changing hair color (Superman III)- but then again, Lois wore wigs and didn't do the dye job & Routh has naturally black hair, so maybe that theory is moot -or- (2) Singer wanted to evoke another time period (though hard to identify what time period he was going for) -or- (3) maybe using the 'new' camera didn't quite give them the look they wanted at the end.

It would be very interesting to watch them both back to back. I'm going to. Been meaning to give MOS another shot, something tells me it's better than I remember. it is. It would be very interesting to watch them both back to back. Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards so the wifey and i were haggling over what to do on christmas day and new years day (other than sleep in, coffee/bacon/oj and bar b q for dinner). we were thinking of movie- marathons. after much debate, we are going to have a "back to the future"/"star trek 3 or 6 or 8"/and "ferris beullar" day for one holiday; and "superman the movie"/"superman returns"/"man of steel" for the other.
